For all knowledgeable......If I wanted to take a Remington 700 Long action in 30.06 could I rebarrel it with a .308 barrel and have a no worries Long action Remington 700 in .308????

I'm looking to have a rifle built but since most new 700 Remingtons have actions in short they won't fit my needs.

This rifle will be built on a synthetic stock....not sure that makes a difference but....

Thanks for your replies. V/R Outlaw5

yeah, but why would you want a long action 308? just because the stock you've selected is for long action?

Outlaw5,

No problem. When Winchester first introduced the .308 Winchester cartridge, there was no short action, and it was chambered in a long action.

Correct! For years and years there was exactly two action lengths for most manufacturers Long and Magnum. But today the gun media has folks thinking the remainder of their hair will fall out if the magazine of your rifle is any longer than it absolutely has to be to feed factory ammo

If I were to build a 308 or 260 rem for target work today it would be on a long action with the throat reamed to facilitate the usage of the extra magazine room with long bullets

Winchester and others used a magazine block with the short action cartridges. You can easily rebarrel in 308 but, you may have to tinker with the mag to insure reliable feeding.

Right on!

Thanks for all the replies and please keep them coming......V/R Outlaw5 :D

Welcome to THR, Outlaw5.

Listen to USSR and krochus, for they echo my thoughts on using longer actions to allow one to seat the bullets out in the magazine, while getting near the lands. It's also beneficial in preventing the bullet from encroaching on the case's powder space at the same time.
The very reasons that I built my 6.5x55 on a VZ-24 action.
