Pete Delli Bovi ... was resting when he heard a noise he said he’ll never forget. “I was watching TV. I closed my eyes a little bit and I heard this big boom. Like, it was so loud. That’s when this guy kicked my door in the back” ... Someone tried to break in through the back door.

Just last year, someone else broke into his garage.

Delli bovi said he got his gun permit and ... used a revolver that ... saved his life. According to police, he shot the intruder –18-year-old Markees Hughes – in the groin.

Delli Bovi is just happy no one else was home. “My grandson, he watches TV in the kitchen ... you know? Nobody expects that in the daylight. Nobody,” Delli Bovi said.

Police said since Delli Bovi acted out of self-defense, he will not be charged.

Well there are certainly a lot of stories over just a few days!

No doubt there are lots of incidences that occur every day where no shots are fired and no one is injured so there are no police reports or news stories to document the incidence.

Long ago when I lived in Houston TX I remember reading in the old Houston Post newspaper a story where a home owner was awaken at 0 dark 30 one morning by what he thought was someone trying to break into his house through a window. He fired at the sound but when he looked afterwards he did not see anyone. He thought he had made a mistake to he did not call the police.

That morning when he went out to go to work he found the dead body of a woman, wearing a stocking mask and armed with a handgun, lying in shallow ditch between his house and his neighbor's. He had been right after all!.

I have no doubt that the number of times people frighten off criminals without firing a shot is many many more times than when the actually pull the trigger.

Georgia mom home alone with kids shoots ex-con intruder

By that time, according to the paper, the intruder had used a crowbar to forcibly enter the home, and made his way to the home office.

“He opens the closet door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a .38 revolver,” Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The woman fired six bullets, five of which hit Paul Ali Slater in the face and neck area, Chapman said. But Slater, who has arrests dating to 2008 and was released from jail in August, was still conscious.

he and his roommate were returning home from work when they were approached by two men on their front porch, one of whom had a gun.

"The guy sprang from the ground, over my rail, and was like open your door, open your house door,” he said. “I said, ‘This is it. This is it for me. God just make sure you watch after my mom and my sisters for me.’”

The resident said his roommate ran, leaving him alone with the men. “I was like, ‘Man, there's no need to go in my house. I've got enough money in my pocket,’” he said. In an attempt to get the money from the homeowner's pants, the robber placed his gun on the ground.

The homeowner said, “I swear, from that moment God said, ‘It's not your time. Here's the gun.’ We kind of tussled for it, and he leaned forward and I pulled the trigger." The man said he shot the man at least twice, including once in the head ... Just as quickly as the whole thing happened, the resident says, it was over

Update - January 2, 2013 - http://www.exit133.com/7308/charges-filed-against-burglar-shot-by-homeowner
Prosecutor ... charged Christopher Rhodes, 20, with Residential Burglary for the June 19, 2012, home invasion burglary of a Tacoma area residence.

The homeowner shot the defendant as he entered the home through a broken window.

“The defendant was caught in the act and lawfully shot,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “Now, he’s going to be held accountable for the burglary. This case is another reminder that breaking into people’s homes can land you in the hospital or prison, if you aren’t killed.”

On June 19, the victim was home alone when he heard knocking at his back door ... the victim heard noises from the defendant prying open a window. The victim armed himself with a shotgun and called 911. The defendant smashed a bay window with an unknown object and was entering the home when the victim fired one shot. The defendant ran to a neighboring home and ... collapsed.

At the time of the alleged burglary, the defendant was in possession of a cell phone with an application that allowed him to monitor police radio broadcasts. One of the witnesses heard dispatch communications coming from the phone.

An inspection of the victim’s home revealed a spent shell casing on the floor near the broken bay window and holes in the curtain covering the window, consistent with a shotgun blast fired from inside the home. The victim told police that the defendant’s torso was inside his house when he fired the shot.

The recent Georgia incident where a mother defended her life and her children's lives against an intruder in her home was the catalyst for this thread that gun ownership has a fundamental purpose in self defense and protection of lives - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=8624766#post8624766

Mom who shot intruder inspires gun control foes - http://news.yahoo.com/mom-shot-intruder-inspires-gun-control-foes-003753089.html
A Georgia mother who shot an intruder at her home has become a small part of the roaring gun control debate, with some firearms enthusiasts touting her as a textbook example of responsible gun ownership.

Melinda Herman grabbed a handgun and hid in a crawl space with her two children when a man broke in last week and approached the family at their home northeast of Atlanta, police said. Herman called her husband on the phone, and with him reminding her of the lessons she recently learned at a shooting range, Herman opened fire, seriously wounding the burglary suspect.

The National Rifle Association tweeted a link to a news story about the shooting, and support poured in from others online, hailing Herman as a hero. The local sheriff said he was proud of the way she handled the situation.

"This lady decided that she wasn't going to be a victim, and I think everyone else looks at this and hopes they have the courage to do what she done," Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman said Wednesday.

Herman ... saw a man walk up to the front door ... rang the doorbell twice and then over and over again ... Herman took her 9-year-old son and daughter into an upstairs bedroom and locked the door. They went into bathroom and she locked that door, too. She got her handgun from a safe, the report said, and hid with her children. At some point, she called her husband, who kept her on the line and called 911 on another line.

In a 10-minute 911 recording released by the Walton County Sheriff's Office, Donnie Herman calmly explained what was happening to a dispatcher ...

"Is he in the house, Melinda? Are you sure? How do you know? You can hear him in the house?" Donnie Herman said.

His wife told him the intruder was coming closer.

"He's in the bedroom? Shh, shh, relax. Just remember everything that I showed you, everything that I taught you, all right?" Donnie Herman told his wife, explaining later to the dispatcher that he had recently taken her to a gun range.

Melinda Herman told police she started shooting the man when he opened the door to the crawl space.

The burglar complied. McRae picked up the shotgun and called 911.

Police say the intruder tried to break into the third floor apartment ... armed with a handgun.

the 36-year-old man ... was shot and killed by the homeowner on the spot during the home invasion. The intruder had several gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Police say the intruder had an accomplice who got away when gunshots rang out.

Under Texas law, the Castle Doctrine typically sides with the homeowner. The law states that a person’s home is their castle and has the right to defend themselves from criminal intruders.

Lawmakers say it presumes that use of force is reasonable and necessary when someone is illegally entering or trying to get into an occupied home, car, or workplace to commit a crime.

Obviouslly that's one major reason we have guns. There are 3-5shootings in Palm Beach every day on my local news.
This is the new normal, and won't improve in this economy and the social climate. Everything from money to illegals, to early release, and mental illness has to be addressed befor you see the crime rate start to fall.
Guns have very little to do with anything, these people would use anything or nothing to get your stuff.
