This is exactly the kind of story that the anti's love. It goes to their beliefs that guns are rarely if ever successfully used in self-defense and that they most likely will be turned against the homeowner.
I'd say that in this case though the good news is that the homeowner, although wounded might still have fended off a rape or murder.
She got the drop on the suspect, I'm wondering if she hesitated and that gave the suspect the opportunity to wrestle the gun from her. If you draw a gun, you better be prepared to use it and quick.

NC Woman Shot With Own Gun During Fight With Intruder
SWANNANOA – A woman armed with a handgun who confronted a man who was attempting to break into her home Tuesday morning wound up being shot with her own gun after the two struggled, and the man escaped on foot.
The young woman, who was home alone after her husband had gone to work, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, Sheriff Van Duncan said.
"She confronted him on the front porch, and they struggled," Duncan said, describing the moments leading up to the shooting.
