What things should be checked with Mak's to make sure of safe function? Already checked the recoil spring, and it needs replaced. But didn't find anything else that really looked worn. Also, the blueing isn't great and was considering bead blasting it and coating with something else. Pictures and ideas would be helpful.

Thanks,
Jim

I won't post pics here to save everybody's bandwidth, but I will post a link to several pics.

If it hasn't been completely cleaned of cosmoline, do that. There are very good instructions and many recommendations for doing so on makarov.com, and the Makarov forums on gunboards.com and glocktalk.com, as well as here and TFL. You should be able to visually inspect most parts for damage, and there are several pics of what a part should look like running around.

One of the most important things to do is check the firing pin and firing pin channel. A stuck firing pin can result in the pistol going full auto (search THR for 'russian mak full auto'). I just heard today of a guy that managed to bulge his barrel after getting a squib load and continuing to fire. He wasn't hurt, luckily. We suspect the ammo, but haven't heard back from him yet. You should also check the decocker/safety for correct function. Find a snapcap for that caliber, chamber it, and practice decocking many times. Make sure you're not getting a hit on the snapcap. If you are, your safety needs to be replaced.

As long as you observe the four rules, it's a very safe, reliable pistol. I'm going to send off one of mine to Mac's Shootin' Irons for his TuffGun finish. Unless the others rust, I'm going to leave them alone.

Read on Makarov.com that if the slide is hitting the frame, to change it. I found marks on the frame where this had been happening, cheap insurance.

How did you determine this?

I change recoil springs as a matter of course on all used semis I buy. Surplus guns, as Makarovs typically are, usually are in more need. Communist military are not exactly known for keeping up with small arms maintenance.
