Recieved mags w/ rust! Best way to get rid of it?

If it were me, I'd sandblast, then Gunkote 'em.

However if you don't have access to a sandblaster, use Breakfree CLP and steelwool. I've used Breakfree on rust before and it ate it up. I'm not a big fan of WD-40, even 3-in-one or motor oil would be better than it. Definately dissasemble them and check the inside.

After letting them soak in the CLP a while, get all the rust off you can, then degrease with mineral sprits and paint them with some Krylon.

Where are you at Mike? I will be happy to sandblast them for you. If you can wait a little while, I will even park them.

A while back, I picked up 4 30rders for ~10.00 from a local MilSurp store. Not great condition at all, covered with rust and large areas of finish gone (I couldn't pass this up, though! :) ). So, I:

1) Sanded them down a lot (not enough, I think) to get off a great deal of the rust, and

2) Sprayed the mag bodies and floorplates with some black engine paint I found in the garage.

Now the paint is flaking off, esp. up around the feed lips and all over the bodies (not necessarily where there's still rust), and the springs are completely rusty. Followers aren't that great either, but the mags work fine except for some squeaking when they're being loaded or dissassembled.

Some refinishing questions: Should I start over? How do I get the engine paint removed? Are new springs/ followers recommended? Would black grill (as in BBQ charcoal grill) hi-temperature paint work well? What about Rustoleum Outdoor Furniture paint?

Of course, these are AK mags, and probably have a few millenia left in 'em as it is. :D

rusty magazines

If the metal is ferrous that is containing iron of steel and no aluminum I would use muriatic acid; it is available at most hardware stores.CAUTION
This is a strong acid.Wear rubber gloves and eye protection and do it outside; the fumes are potent. Rinse the magazines thoroughly , dry them thoroughly then paint or prime depending on your choice of paints.
To remove old paint try paint remover or stripper. Baking soda will neutralize the acid....keep it handy along with running water. On the other sand blasting is good.

Rusty magazines

Navel jelly is good; you may need a stiff brush and a bit of elbow grease I stongly suggest a good rinse after using it. Navel jelly is acidic, contains phosphoric acid, and is safer than muriatic acid ( crude hydrocloric)

Dude, just tell your friends that you or your dad (depending on age) picked them off a dead VC in 'nam. Those arent BLEMISHED magazines. They are "battle damaged".

You Sandblast and remove all contaminates from the mag surface and then place it in a hot acid bath with manganese disolved in it(or zinc depending on what you want).
