Just wondering if anyone has had the chance to compare the recoil of a full size beretta 96 4o cal to that of a normal 1911 run of the mil smith or colt I know thw beretta I had a 96 vertec had a good kick to it, just looking into a 1911 and was wondering if the kick would be alot more with the bigger round

recoil comparison

The vertec you own has a close to 90 deg grip angle which might enhance recoil, 1911 is angled beyond 90 (somebody knows the proper angle and will let us know)
I personaly have owned a 96 and feel that it recoils much sharper than
45acp in 1911.
You will enjoy the feel of a 1911.

ps dont trade or sell the 96 you will regret doing so

IMO the bereta 92's recoil is just barely less than a 1911's. Anyone else notice this?

I've owned both but I never warmed up to the 40 cal. Recoils are diff't in the 40 & the 45 and between the 2, I really prefer the 45 acp. But, in the 40 S&W, the 96 is the nicest shooting of all those I've tried.

i have yet to shoot the regular 92/96 stlye Beretta but I can imagine the size and weight of the beretta in 9mm the recoil is probably close to nothing

I own and shoot both a Beretta 96 and 1911. The 96 has more recoil, and more muzzle flip then the 1911. 1911's are easier to shoot.

I think that recoil in a 1911 is very mild. I have never shot a 96, but there is no reason to fear the recoil of a fullsize 1911 in .45. Felt recoil, for me, in a 1911 is less than that of a 9mm Sig p226.

I had a Beretta 96 for several months and it was a superb pistol; I just couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. I sold it and turned the money around into my first 1911 in .45 ACP. To me, the two pistols exhibit totally different recoil profiles - an entirely subjective observation, but valid nonetheless. The recoil of a 1911 in .45 is, for me, infinitely more controllable and pleasant to shoot than the .40 in the Beretta 96.

Funny thing is, I can shoot .40 in my Sig P229 just great. Love the cartridge, love the pistol.

I too have both. They both have a good recoil, but they're "different" recoils. The 96 has more "bark" to it. The 1911 seems to recoil straight back, while the 96 has the muzzle flip.

I had a 92FS Brigadier in 9mm. It was a nice gun. The 9mm recoil was not much doe to the massive frame and weight of the gun.

As a .40 caliber one I cant tell you as I usually fire my .40 from HKs and Glocks. I suspect it will not be very strong recoil in a 96.

As for a 1911 I would inform you that recoil is manageable and light. It is a very fun gun to shoot. It is very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I really cannot stress it enough.

I have found the recoil of a 5" 1911 45acp to be very manageable, even pleasant in an odd sort of way. I only have about 50 rds experience shooting .40 cal from a Glock and found it to be very "snappy', not bad, but just more than I prefered from a handgun on a regular basis.

I own a Beretta 96 (my first handgun) and 2 SA 1911s. I would have to say the 96 recoil is somewhat snappier. I replaced the stock recoil spring in the 96 with a 16# spring from Wolff. (I believe the stock spring is a 13#.) This seemed to make the recoil less snappy, especially with hotter 155 and 165 gr loads. Both platforms are enjoyable to shoot in my opinion. I just prefer .45 over .40 after shooting both.

The .40 cal guns generally feel like they have more recoil than a .45 but the unarguable physics of the cartridges show that the .45 will generate aproximately 5% or more recoil momentum than the .40 in most all loadings. The main reason the 40's apear to recoil more is that most pistols chambered for the cartridge are lighter in weight than a typical 1911a1. The Colt 1911 weights aproximately 14% more than the Beretta 96 so even with ammo generating 5% more recoil momentum the Colt will have less actual recoil.
