Are recoil compensators illegal in NJ or are the considered muzzle brakes??? I saw a video of one in action and it definatly reduced the recoil.

It all depends if it on a rifle or handgun. If it is called a flash suppressor than it is illegal. A muzzle brake or compensator is legal but depends on what kind of firearm. An Armalite comes with one but a Busmaster does not. Then there is the whole bayonet lug issue as well as a pistol grip, substantionaly identical clause and so on. If I have questions I normally call the State Police Firearms Bureau. They have answered any questions I had. If it is for a bolt action, you should not have a problem. But, this is NJ.
