I have a Winchester 1300 Ranger 20ga pump with a 22" barrel. The original owner swapped out the youth sized stock for a full-length one.

My 12 year old son wants to try some trap shooting, so I need to shorten up the LOP on the stock from 14" to about 12". I'm planning to ask the wood shop teacher at the Middle School for some help.

What are some recoil pads that might work for this DIY project? I need something that can be fitted using tools you'd find at a Middle School. And what's the process for fitting and sizing a recoil pad?

Instead of cutting the current stock why not check and see if you can find a youth stock for it? It would be ashame to cut the stock only to need to buy a full size stock in a few short years.

Look up Pachmayr, Limbsaver, and others - if they do not have a ready-made one, they will have instructions on how to order the right size hole pattern that then may need to be ground to fit the stock properly. If you or the shop teacher really have no idea about this, a decent smith can do it fairly inexpensively and do it right.

Personally, a 20 gauge pump with a short 22" barrel is not the best choice for someone to try trap and be successful

I agree that a 20 gauge pump with a 22" barrel isn't the best choice, but right now it's our only choice. The gun was originally a Ranger Youth/Ladies model but the previous owner ditched the 12" LOP stock and replaced it with a 14" LOP stock. So I would actually be "restoring" this gun to its original dimensions!

If I keep the gun around as a short HD pump, then having a short stock isn't a problem. I have a leather Pachmayr leather recoil pad that can take the LOP back out to 14".

Hogue 12" LOP stocks come standard with a fairly decent recoil pad {it might be a rebadged Pachmeyr Decelerator} and have a much better overall feel than a cut factory stock.

Would the Hogue stocks fit on a 20 gauge Winchester 1300 receiver? I've seen them advertised, but was never sure if they are only for 12 gauge shotguns.

I found a wooden youth sized stock for this gun that's supposed to be a drop in replacement.

It's $90 + shipping. That's not cheap, but it is what it is. This way I can preserve the 14" LOP stock for later but get a 12" LOP that'll work well for the next several years. (And it looks nice, too.)

I'm also seeing replacement 28" barrels for the Winchester 1300 20ga for around $140, so if my boys take to trap, I have some options.

EDIT: Just used "BuyNow" for this on Gunbroker.com
