I have a 460 hunter with a 12" non ported barrel, I am thinking about getting a ruger super red hawk in 454 with a 7.5" barrel. The 460 is just too heavy to hold to shoot off hand. My only concern is the difference in recoil. The big heavy 460 isnt too bad, how will the 454 compare in a lighter pistol? I want a pistol to hunt with that i can confidently shoot without a rest. From your experiences which recoils more? Thank you for your help. Lee.

Super Redhawks are supposed to be the hardest kicking .454s out there, due to their light weight. Dunno how they compare to .460s, though.

Actually the Ruger Super Redhawk's are not that bad as far as felt recoil in my opinion. A Freedom Arms 454 Casull in my opinion has more felt recoil than the Ruger. But as for the 460 and 454 Casull. The S&W 460 Mag is a very heavy gun, and the recoil is less than the 454 Casull Super Redhawk.

Have you considered getting the Ruger in 480 Ruger. Even though they are discontinued by Ruger, they are a great round. I think it is one of the most over looked hunting cartridge out there.

.454 srh

The angle of the gripframe on the SRH is the reason it kicks like a mule. The FA guns have a Bisley type frame and it allows the gun to roll more than the SRH. I think the way you grip the SRH will determine how bad you get pounded. I shoot a 300 grain SP with 27 grains of 2400 and trust me, you know it when the primer is busted. But I won't hold it any tighter than I would a .357. If you put a death grip on it, it'll stomp you, let it go ahead and jump up, twist and make an awful noise and you'll enjoy it a lot more and even start one handing it before long.
