Shot my newish 300 rem ultra mag quite a bit this weekend (most since I've owned it) after going to clean it tonight I noticed a bunch of flaks on the lens. Attempted to clean lens but no luck. After further inspection it looks like it's inside the back end of the scope.

Did the heavy 300rum recoil nock some paint off? The scope is a bit older but shoots great.

Right in time for hunting next weekend -_-

Can I clean it? Or is it toast

Inside the scope, black anti-reflection coating is coming loose.
Could have cracked it loose when mounting it on the new rifle when the rings were tightened in a different place on the tube.

As long as it holds zero, and you can still see through it??
It will kill a deer this year.

But don't let your friends look through it!!
Cause they will laugh at you for using it!

Mmmmkay?

Unless it's a name brand scope with a lifetime warranty?

I'd start saving up for a new Leopold or something before next season.

Yea it might be time to save up, this scope has some years on it but has worked great until I put it on this rifle. If I spin/focus the eyepiece the locations of the flakes change. Could I remove eyepiece and inspect or just not mess with it. Thanks for the response

If it's not something with a lifetime warranty and it's still holding true on the range, then don't worry about it. Just figure it's time to squirrel away a few bucks here and there for the day it might fail...and replace it at your convenience otherwise after you've saved up a stash.

If it is something with a warranty, then contact the company and make arrangements to have it sent in for repairs.

I wouldn't bother with trying to take the lens out to repair as long as it's functional. And DEFINATELY don't do that if it's a warranty scope...you'll void the warranty. The flakes are likely a symptom of other issues in the scope, like the black anti-reflecting coating that rcmodel mentioned. Clean it out and likely more will come lose later anyway.

If the scope fails on you (and it's not a warranty scope) OR you've replaced it already, THEN is the time to fiddle with taking the lenses out if you want.

It happens. I trashed a weaver HG scope on my 460sw a few weeks ago. Replaced with Leupold and couldnt be happier. Send it back or at least contact company to see if they will do anything about it. Weaver replaced mine with no hassle, I just decided that it was not going to be worth the risk on the revolver. If time is an issue you might have to buy another anyway.
