This is a bit of a second try. I got some great recommendations for a bolt knob from the Gunsmithing and Repairs guys, but I need someone to thread the handle. I'm in South Louisiana. Local service would be great, but I'm fully willing to ship the bolt. Can you recommend a machinist/smith to do the work? What's the average price for such work?

Thanks

BTW, I bought the Tactical - Single Knurl from Bill's Bolt Knobs and couldn't be more impressed. I think I'm going to order a few more so I can accessories based on my mood and clothing. ;)

We can do it, its a PITA but we have an OD cutter for such stuff. What is the thread size, 5/16x18?

I've done it with merely a bench grinder and a hardware store tap & die set. It can be done but it's a PITA

Yup, really hard to get the threads centered that way. We thread our bolt handle shanks before forging them, just for that reason.

I installed Badger Ordnance tactical bolt knobs on two of my Remington 700s. It really wasn't that hard. I used a hacksaw, angle grinder and some files and was able to do a good job. I started with an angle grinder and hacksaw to remove most of the material. I then followed the drawing and filed a square (.313 inches) boss. I marked all four faces with permanent red pen and then proceeded to round off the corners making sure that I could still see a thin red line in the center of each face. Finally, I used a drill press (as a guide) and a 5/16-24 die to start threading the boss. It took about 1 hour to complete.

You guys are pretty damn industrious, but when it comes to metal, I have squat for tools and know even less.

I think I'll call the King's shops in the morn. Hey King, you think you could jewel my bolt while your at it. :)

if you want, look up Walt Sherman in Tallahassee, FL he is king in N. Florida. His buisness is not listed, but he has a house line and his wife will either give you his cell or take a message for him. He makes beautiful Custom Mausers if you are into that kind of thing. They shoot also.

We don't normally do much jeweling but we can if you want it. Our more popular option is high polish finish, we do our bolt handles in either a brushed finish or a polish so fine that you can see your reflection in it. We can do whatever finish you want though.

... I think he installed a roller-bearing sear conversion in my Colt Python many years ago. I couldn't remember his name but I'm sure that's the guy. He did a fantastic job!! Do you have his contact info? I'd love to drop him a line to tell him thanks all these years later.
