until you have to start replacing broken parts...

And why would that be a problem?

Oh Noes! The Dreaded Taurus Customer Service Department :what:
cue: scary music and thunder...

Lucky I Never had to use them. The PT1911 takes standard parts, so in the unlikely event something broke, I would change it myself.

American Classic or the Firestorm same pistol different rollmarks made in Phillipines and 1911 compatable. Mine and others I know that have them have found them dead relieable right from box Should be around 450

Great feedback all. I am making a list of models to research. Does anyone know which ones are commonly seen or available at gun shows? I am in Wisconsin.

Herohog, I don't have the funds at this time to even consider your offer.

You should see the Springfield's, Taurus and RIA's at any show.

You should see most of the big manufactures.

I've seen a few comments about the Parkerized finish on the RIA's not being very durable. Can anyone tell me how this compares to a standard blue? I know the barrel at the ejection port on my XDm shows a good bit of wear after 500 rounds.

If you have $500 do yourself a favor and save another $200.

If you know where to buy them you can get a Colt Govt or Commander for $700 + transfer.

It will serve you better than any RIA, Taurus, Nork, SA or Para.

Seriously, use the search function as this topic has been beat to death in the past months. Not trying to be rude but it's been WELL covered recently...

I used the search NGIB. My thread is based on the $500 price point and was expecting suggestions specific to that. I read through all the best 1911 threads but all the best 1911's are well more than $500.

I was hoping to hear from the members that were in the same situation and could only afford entry level 1911. I've received great feedback regarding this.

I did post in another 1911 thread about my interest in purchasing one and budget but did not get into detail because I didn't want to hi-jack the thread.

I thought this was enough to justify starting a new one.

Springfield GI. Those are $500. For a little more you can get the Springfield mil-spec (around $575). I think Springfield is better quality than anything else that sells for $500. There aren't many new 1911s that retail for $500 to choose from though.

I haven't seen a Taurus for 500 , but the RIA Tactical for less than 500 is everywhere, and a GREAT gun for the money !!!

had a norino-jammed constantly with a dozen different mags

i'd get either a para gi expert or a springer mil spec, both are about $500 (the gi expert gives you much more for the money!)

the springer loaded that people are suggesting is actually much more expensive-around $800

Ok guys, I've been reading up a bit and I think I've narrowed it down to the few below.

Para GI Expert
Springfield GI Mil-Spec
Taurus PT1911

I've also read a little about the RIA GI Tactical but I am concerned about the finish holding up.

I stopped by Gander Mountain on the way home to see if they had any of these models but it was a bust. I wanted to see how they fit my hand.

Whoa the prices of ammo at Gander, well the prices of everything really. I might have to take a 40 minutes ride to Scheels, Im sure they have a few in stock.

Of those 3 I'd heartily recommend the Springer and tell you to stay away from the other two.

I've had both a Springer and the Rock. The Rock is just as good and the park finish will hold up just fine.

I am a fan of Springfield quality. My XDM 9mm is a great gun, It been 100% reliable.

if you can find one, get the para gi expert, you won't regret it! :D

my gi expert feeds everything i put in it, and shoots 1 hole out to 20 yards. it has a polished feed ramp, barrel throat and extraactor too. the muzzle is precision crowned at 11 degrees too. and the slide to frame fit is hand lapped together. all for $500-$550. the quality is very high. they offset these features with a plastic trigger (which has a great trigger pull by the way-4lbs), and plastic main spring housing, among other things which don't really matter anyway. para put their efforts into the accuracy and reliability on this one, not extended ambi thumb safeties etc..

but if you can't find the para gi (they're more rare than gold), and you're in a hurry to buy a 1911, i would get the springer mil spec.:)

as for RIA, do you really want a $350 1911 made in a third world country? :barf:

as for taurus:barf:-there's a reason you get $2000 worth of custom features for $600-you get what you pay for! (and besides, everyone says their customer service stinks)

and never buy ammo at gander mountain-rip off!

My Gander will price-match local shops. All I've needed is a shop business card with a model# and price written on the back in the past, when Gander was the only place with something in stock. If a good local shop has it in stock, you're really better off buying from them, you'll have a chance to haggle and be more likely to get some support if you have a problem.

S&WMP45 , if you don't want a pistol made in a 3rd world country , why would you buy a Springfield ?

I get the point but I don't think Brazil is considered a 3rd world country anymore.
