I am pretty new to shooting. I bought a Glock 19 for myself for the range and home defense. However mywife isn't a fan. She asked for a 22 revolver so I firgured I'd ask here. I don't want something too expensive just a good value.

Thanks.

A used H&R is pretty tough to beat when you are on a budget. They go bang every time the trigger is pulled and they last forever.

If you want a single action .22, the only place to look is ruger!

A Ruger Bearcat or Single Six depending on your preference would be a great choice, but they are a little on the expensive side for a plinking gun. The Cimarron Plinkerton can be had for under $200 and seemed to be solid, not quite Ruger solid, but servicable. I'm a single action nut, so I don't have too many recommendations for DAs.

I've owned a Ruger convertible six (.22 lr / .22 magnum). I had to sell it at the time, but I'm keeping my eye out for another. That revolver is single action, for double action, the Smith And Wesson are what might be called heirloom, they are beautifully made last for ever and cost $$$. Hi Standard revolvers such as the Sentinel. I own Hi Standard .22 auto's and love them. I would expect their revolvers to be good quality also.

Best thing to do, as long as she knows more or less what she doesn't like (your Glock), is to let her handle and/or shoot a variety of revolvers until she finds one whose balance, appearance, trigger, and so forth appeal to her. Bottom line, if you want her to trust the gun and practice with it, let her choose it.

You don't want to spend a lot, I understand, but if you can find a Smith & Wesson 617 that you can afford, you won't regret the purchase. Rugged, reliable, super-accurate, great trigger right out of the box.

That seems like a fine idea. One problem in my case my wife hates going to gun stores she finds it boring. She doesn't like the fact that I seem to be unable to make a decision. I guess it is the same way I feel when she takes me to clothes stores.

My wife will shoot guns a long as they are my guns. I am not sure that she wants one of her own.

Buy the way I am not the op

My wife is the same way--and that's OK with me. She likes putting maybe a couple dozen rounds through my K-22 when I'm out in the yard shooting my 617, and I'm glad to have her company. She doesn't like the (6-inch) 617--too heavy. She'll shoot my K-38, too, but she isn't interested in autoloaders or anything in a larger caliber. Again, that's fine with me.

The OP says his wife has asked for a .22, so that's a different situation. If she wants a .22 of her own, she'll probably enjoy picking one out herself.

Thanks for the advice.

She also hates gun stores and gun shopping so I need to pick it out. I like semi autos over revolvers but I know compromise is key :)

I will do some homework and the above posts are a great start.

Thanks again

get a ruger single six you get a .22 and .22 mag cylinder for about $500 or less if you want a even cheaper single action get a "Plinkerton" by Cimarron it's a cheap gun that retails around $189.

I got a Ruger single six with the magnum cylinder conversion for 22mag for just over $200 used. I think it was $229, but I forget exactly.
Works well, although it is single action only, and you have to load and unload it one chamber at a time.
Although certainly not ideal, the 22mag could be used for defense, and is good for someone who "only wants a .22." Just the noise from a 22mag would have a baddie ducking and taking cover. Very loud lol.

There are a lot of Ruger fans and while I really like them I find it boring to have to use a push rod to push out each and every empty. There is a lot of fiddling with a single action and your wife might not want to do it.

My Daughters fuss about who is going to get my S&W 35 when I die, they are reasonably light weight and easy to load and unload. There is a S&W 34 in the classifieds that might be a little cosmetically challenged but it would fit her hands and is very nice to shoot.

S&W also has some very nice K frame 22s that are very accurate.

My Wife also likes her Smith 317 w/ 3in barrel. I tried 2 different Taurus 94's, trying to save some money, I got what I paid for. I never left the gun store/range w/ either. Neither would work new out of the box, dealer gave me my money back.

Find yourself a Dan Wesson 22 and get it cheap. Accurate, reliable, easy to use and built like a tank.

50 shots per target at 15 yrds offhand. Great gun!

Is there a good DA alternative for the Single Six? I've read so many good things about that gun but wouldn't want an SA.

The Smith and Wesson 617 is a very highly regarded DA revolver. Very accurate and reliable. 10 shots too. It is heavy though at 45 oz, nearly 4 times that of the 317 (11.9 oz) in the pictures below...

I second wnycollector's suggestion, more specifically, an H&R 929. They have the swing out cylinder and hold 9 rounds. The one in the picture cost me $55 total, shipped price. I got it on Gunbroker some months back. It's a a fabulous trigger pull. Although I got really lucky, price-wise, they'll usually go for $100-$150, max. If she likes shooting, you can get her a S&W or something as costly later.

If she has small hands and doesn't mind a bit of kick in her hands when it fires then get her a S&W Model 34 "kit" gun in the 4" if this is more a range toy or in the smaller snubbie version if it's more for carry.

I've shot the 4" version and although it's a squeeze to get my big hand around it the gun itself is really delightful to shoot. Small and light enough to have some "life" to it when it fires and fast to reload being a hand ejector style.

I have to say though that the 317 posted above sure looks like fun. AND MORE ROUNDS TOO! ! ! THat's important when I'm shooting .22... :D
