Recommend a good "gun" movie that is somewhat obscure

Mamoru Oshii's Avalon. Kind of like The Matrix, which is no surprise given that the director's earlier works were obvious and direct influences on the Wachowski brothers.

Anything directed by John Woo before he emigrated to the United States, most notably Hard Boiled, though I don't consider those terribly obscure.

Lone Star . 1996 with Kris Kristofferson and Chris Cooper. Terrific murder/mystery; in fact, a great movie regardless of genre.

"Heist." Great 1911 and Sig action in the first, rare CZ-75 action in the second. Both seem to have fairly realistic shootouts too.

Heist was good. Although I was greatly amused to find out that the rich guy driving the nice convertible, buying a yacht for $100 grand cash, carries a mere RUGER semiauto to the meeting.

I have to put my hat in the ring for...hmmmm...Joe Kidd. Haven't seen all of it, but it's got some guns that aren't the same old thing.

Not so much gun related but more of interesting flick
"American History X"

Even though its corny, it still has Angelina Jolie
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith"

Bandolero!

100 Rifles

Hannie Caulder

In case you haven't recognised the theme, here is a clue;

Winchester 73 Classic Jimmy Stewart, not really obscure just a bit old. Real trick shooting, no special effects used.

The Untouchables Lots of good gun play but not particularly obscure.

To Hell and Back Again, not particularly obscure, just awesome.

And as G23/40 said, HEAT!!! Killer movie.

I didn't see this mentioned, and it's Sam Raimi at his best (taking on the Western Genre):

The Quick and the Dead

It has great gunplay, and is hilarious, like almost any Sam Raimi film.

I think the last GUN movie i saw that was really neat was called The Shooter with Mark Wahlberg in it. Dont remember accuracy but the guy is a former Marine Sniper and the movie starts with him getting asked to "Protect" the POTUS. Anything else i would be giving away spoilers.

Most movies with Mark Wahlberg that ive seen are good movies, at least they entertain you for the length of the movie and sometimes merit a 2nd or 3rd viewing. Also they involve guns.

Well, I dunno how obscure NetFlix gets, and I dunno what your tolerance is for foreign films, dubbed or subtitled, but try finding Double Tap(2000) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258489/

This is the film that dares to answer the question, "What if a champion IPSC shooter like Rob Leatham or Jerry Barnhart decided to use his powers and abilities for evil?"

The technical details of IPSC competition and race-guns/race-gear are actually quite accurate, even considering that it's getting filtered through a language barrier twice(English-language U.S. source material-to-Chinese dialogue, then translated back to English).

EDIT: I don't think anyone else has mentioned it yet, but any or all of the Tremors movies are worth renting, just for the antics of Burt Gummer("Broke into the wrong G*d d@mn rec room, didn't ya you b@stard!")! :D

Death Wish
Both Dawn of the Dead movies (original and remake)
True Grit
Big Jake
The Mechanic
High Plains Drifter
Ravenous-not extremely gun related but still awesome.

These ones are less obscure but good all the same if you haven't seen them:

Dirty Harry and Magnum Force are the two good ones
No Country For Old Men
Predator
Terminator & T2
The Outlaw Josey Whales

Tremors is one of the finest movies I've ever seen.

Zulu British vs. Zulus

ANZACS WWI Aussie/New Zealanders
The Lighthorsemen WWI Aussie/New Zealanders
Capitaine Conan WWI French assault platoon vs. Austrians in Italy

The Winter War WWII Finland vs. USSR in 1940
Stalingrad WWII

Savior Serbs & mercs vs. Bosnians during the 1990s war

The Beast! Masterpiece of a movie!

I can't believe I forgot Tremors, and Collateral...and The Survivors was funny.

Edit: And Hitman. Fairly true to the games, except for the swordfight.
