Recommend a good "gun" movie that is somewhat obscure

I have to lay a vote down for "The Fastest Gun Alive" w/ Glenn Ford (1956)
It has corny characters, the story rather antiquated, but its a good little gun movie which deals w/ the repercussions of gun fighting.

I'll second:

The Winter War. Absolute "must see" war movie.
Thin Red Line. Anything by Terrence Malick is worth watching if only for the visuals.

Neither are wall to wall action, but both are greatly overlooked movies about war.

Not very obscure and a little corny, but have you seen Smoking Aces?

Commando might fit your request nicely.

Predator had some good shooting in it too, IIRC. Typical '80s Schwarzenegger corniness though.

The books are great, too.

Usually follow the same routine, but damn if they aren't entertaining and interesting. Loosely based in fact, with a 3 page history lesson in the back of the book. They're by Bernard Cornwell.

I have not read much of the thread, so if someone already mentioned it, sorry. "Savior". Dennis Quaid. Beautiful movie, makes you cry, and some weapons I had to post on THR to figure what they were.

I read the books then found out they had a complete series and got that. I think what interested me most the transition from musket to rifle and how accurate they were. I'd love to have an authentic Baker but the only place I know of that would have any is in Afghanistan. Some of the tribal leaders still have some that were given to them by British.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned "A History of Violence" with Vigo Mortenson. Fairly obscure movie, good gun action. I thought it was a great movie.

Two Westerns

Winchester 1873 -- Jimmy Stewart. With the aid of a stunt man (Herb Parsons), Steward puts a round through a washer thrown into the air.

Joe Kidd. Clint Eastwood. Some obscure guns that apparently really existed and worked well.:)

Heat
Zulu
Boondock Saints

I know I am going to get flak for this, but its goofy fun:
The Big Hit

Yes, its Marky Mark and he's a jackhole, but Lou Diamond Philips is funny as hell. Its over the top and you just have to be in the mood for a goofy movie - dont take it seriously.

Also like
Desperado (also silly at points but lots of fun)
Dusk til Dawn (silly as well)
3000 Miles to Graceland

I watched a flick the other day with Clive Owens, a baby, a prostitute (gorgeous) and a carrot...yes...a carrot.

Paul Giamanti plays a bad guy, and there's some pretty good action. I can't remember the title.

You wouldn't believe what you can do with a carrot.

A made for TV movie, but Netflix has it on 2 DVDs is Rough Riders. lots of guns, lots of action, and a good bit of history thrown in, a good movie, well worth your time.

With Sam Elliot as Bucky O'Neil, and Gary Busey as Joe Wheeler, directed by John Milius, how could you go wrong? Even Dale Dye gets to show off his acting chops as Leonard Wood. And Berenger does a Bully TR.

Shoot'em Up

I love how this thread is based around the notion of listing obscure movies, and nearly all of the posts list titles that are mainstream Hollywood releases or widely-known classics.

Shoot'em Up

Also, this is one of the worst piece of **** films I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through. Even as ironic, over-the-top parody it was an utter failure. Not even the presence of Monica Bellucci could rescue that steaming pile.

I think we have plenty of movie suggestions between this and the other 400 "name a movie featuring guns" threads. :)
