Hi,

I own a Husqvarna FN 98 Mauser in 8x57 mauser. I'm planning to mount a scope on it but I'm not sure what type of magnification, features, and quality I need. I'm in the Pacific NW so lots of dense forests and the odd pasture or wide field (farmland). Will be hunting black-tail, moose, elk, bear, everything that 8x57 can take down. I think it should be able to if loaded properly right?

I would look at a medium low power variable.

Something like this:

Or this:

The 2x setting will give you a very wide field of view for tracking running game, and good light transmission in the woods or poor weather.

The 7X setting will reach out and touch something as far as you should be shooting at something with an 8mm.

Then you got the 3X, 4X, 5X, & 6X settings in between for various other range & light conditions.

Budge wise, probably $200-250

What's the difference between 2-7x vs 3-9x. Is the jump between 2 and 3 mag a lot? How about 7 vs 9 mag? And 33mm vs 40mm lens?

Looking at the Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 and the Bushnell 3200 elite in 3-9x40. What do you guys recommend?

For the size of animal your hunting, a low power variable is the best choice. The Bushnell 3200 is a very good scope, and the rather heavy retical they have is my only complaint. But your shooting at big stuff so it wont hurt you a bit, and very well may help out. The Leupold VXI-VXII are over priced(IMO) But the VX3 on up are generally worth the money.

Both scopes have the option of a BDC reticle. Are these worth it and do they actually work?

I have that Redfield scope that rcmodel recommended on one of my rifles....it's a GREAT scope for the money....really clear optics and a real bargain. So, +1 for the Redfield Revolution 2-7 scope...

In that price range the Burris FFII is the best choice imo, and I've used quite a few scopes in both that price range, and the next step up. A 2-7x35 is a good choice for close shots, but honestly I prefer a 3-9x40 over a 2-7. I just prefer power up top more than I do down low to a certain extent, but it's really a personal preference as some guys prefer lower powered variables.

In those conditions a 2-7x would probably be best.
The Mueller 2-7x is another good option. I had the 8.5-25x on my .300 RUM and it held up well.
