Recommend Assault Rifle for not-rich buddy

If rifle and ammo prices are serious limitations, how about a Norinco SKS? Ammo, fuel and food prices will get higher, maybe much higher.

After handling mine one week, the Yugo then seemed heavier than necessary and clumsy, with the grenade launcher and bayonet adding the weight out where the increased leverage is felt. It would be harder to maneuver inside a house or under tree limbs.

Those who try the even shorter Paratrooper version seem to prefer them.
With the common x39 ammo, adding a Saiga etc one day would be simple.

How about an SKS or decent AK type rifle with a nice, compact 4X scope? Get a scope with illuminated reticles for night work if needed or you guys might consider a nice red dot scope mounted on it. With a scope you would not be looking to turn either an SKS or AK into a sniper rifle but, instead, you would be looking to enhance your buddy's shooting abilities a little bit. In fact, if I were you guys, I'd borrow a rifle or carbine with a low power scope mounted on it to see if the idea of such a device would help out your pal's shooting. A decent rifle with a low power scope is a pretty smart way to go.

Lightly used AR on gunbroker for $619!

I saw this just 10min before reading this post and thought, "Dang, I'd-a bought this if it was avail before I bought my AR a few weeks ago!" This looks like a great deal on a lightly used AR. I have bought a few guns from Redstradingpost before and they have always been top-notch.

With a buy-now price of $619, it's over $230 cheaper then what I spent for mine, but mine is a flat-top.

SKS. The TAPCO 20 round mags work quite reliably. Maintenance is not much of an issue, just shoot non corrosive and keep the barrel clean. Easy to strip if it does.

Add a Tapco T-6 stock, a red dot, 4 or 5 mags, enough compliance parts to make it legal  , and you are set.

Several of the posts are penalizing you for using the term "assault rifle" incorrectly. Assault rifles are select fire and not what you are discussing.

The SKS did not meet the definition of the recently expired 'assault weapon ban'.

My apologies, I will use unbanned Scary Black/Green Rifle (SRB) from now on. It is hard to distinguish a formerly banned SRB and other possibly not formerly banned weapons like some SKS's though as the law was silly in the first place. I hope that isn't confusing. Again, the whole point of the misuse of the word 'assault weapon' is to support the "common use" clause of the last ruling.

I have no problem teaching him how to assemble it. His immediate budget is going to be in the sub 1K range. Are SKS's classified as assault weapons under the recently expired ban? Again he wants to support the "common use" clause.

Unmodified SKSs were not classifed as "assault weapons" under the old Federal law, and even the new stricter California law, and even the various import regulations.

As for nomenclature I just call them "assault weapons" in quotes, for one thing the laws defining them include certain shotguns and pistols as well as rifles. An assault rifle is a pretty well defined term in military usage.

That Rock River kit would still require a stripped lower receiver, correct? Not that much savings if you shop around. Unless he really wants to go through the hassle of putting in the lower parts kit in the receiver I would just buy a new one.

Rock River is an OK brand, doesn't have the quality control steps that the military demands from Colt, but pretty much none of the big commercial AR makes do. If you still want a kit, I might shop around see if you can get one cheaper than that.

If your friend really can't afford more than $650 (in which case I honestly think there are better ways of spending his money) I would recommend an AK of some sort, perhaps a Yugo or WASR from Century. They are accurate enough if you do your part.

Get a Saiga in your favorite caliber and convert it to pistol grip configuration. I have about $500 in this .223/5.56 Saiga and it will do what all the expensive guns will. Good luck............:D

Well, assault rifles are effectively banned for civilian use. If you want a military-style, semi-automatic, rifle, then I'd go with an AK or an AR-15.

I'm actually going to be putting together my first AR pretty soon. I just ordered a stripped lower for it. I'm planning on ordering a rifle kit from www.del-ton.com. Should cost around $650 total.

Just for general plinking at the range and to freak out the anti's how about Keltec SU16. Rod operated like an AK so it isn't quite as sensitive to cleaning, but still takes AR magazines. Factory sights are cheap looking and hard to adjust, but I can hit the 100 yard gong with it. Plus its <$500 and comes with a lifetime warranty.
