I appreciate all the input & responses. Ultimately, I used an in-the-bore model instead of the type cdb1 demonstrated, as at least one muzzle device I have does not present a flat surface upon which to accurately mount a magnetic unit. I was concerned the 'stick' end would not be long enough to reach the barrel, but even with a 1.5" pinned comp, it worked perfect. BRIGHT green laser was easily visible in full summer daylight. My only complaint was the size of the dot - ~1" @ 25 yards. But I felt that closely approximated the average spread I might see across various loads, and indeed - it pretty much was.

Is it necessary? Probably not. Did it make everything much easier to set up accurately? Absolutely. Did it save me ammo? Yes. Did it possibly improve the accuracy of my readings by assuring the bullet path and chrono path were perfectly parallel? I think so.

I started with a rifle I had never shot, sights not sighted in, and rounds I had just produced. Set up the rifle on bags with the bore sight illuminating the target diamond's center. Used the laser dot to align the chrono perfectly along all axes 15' out from muzzle. Came back and adjusted the sights to match the dot. First group was < .5moa off point of aim. Every round was read by chrono w/o error.

For $35, I'm quite pleased with the investment. Plus my cat loves chasing the bright green dot.
