Well the old tasco 6-24x has done well for me considering the price I paid for it ($80), but its going out (no longer holds center). I want to upgrade to something much nicer, and have been looking at the various burris models.

However I am open to anything thats good quality, is at least 6-24x, and costs under $800. So what do you guys recommend?

I recently visited 3 major retailers lookin for the same answer. I fondeled everthing under $1200 and for the money the Nikon Monarch 6-24x 50mm Side Focus with the Target Dot for $600ish and the Burris Xtreme Tactical XTR Scope 30mm Tube Side Focus 6-24x 50mm with the Fine Plex Reticle for $700ish were clearly my choices...optics were as clear and bright as scopes costing up to $2000 IMO I'm saving up!

I just ordered one of those Weaver Grand Slams from Natchez, that's a lot of glass for the money. Even without the rebate I would have gone for it. It's almost $75 cheaper than the FFII 4.5-14 I bought a month or so ago for the .300 Winnie.

I use a 4.5x14 50mm Leupold Varix-III. I also came from a tasco. I think you will find that you don't need a high powered scope when you have clarity from high quality glass. 14x is plenty for a .223

agree w/ stover - 14x is enough - and i enjoy small targets at long range.

you might also look into the cabela's alaskan guide line - good solid scope for the money, pretty good glass, and warranty is awesome.

my own ar-15's: one wears leupold 8.5-25x, and the other wears a cabela's alaskan guide. the big leupold is too much of a good thing, and the cabela's alaskan guide would be my 3rd choice. first being leupold vx-3 4.5-14, second zeiss 4.5-14, and third would be the a.g.

My AR wears a 4-16 Leupold with Milldot and Target knobs. Whatever you decide on I would highly suggest target knobs for a varmint rig. My wife's .243 wears a 3-15 nightforce. That would be my first choice for a short range varmint gun but it was too hard to justify more money in optics than the gun cost for my AR. I am happy with the Leupold and would recommend it for your application.

I'm considering the Shepherd scopes for my varmit hunting. They are a bit pricey compared to some others, but within your stated budget.
