I've been reloading shotshells for about 12 years now, and when I started almost everyone recommended I use Hodgdon Clays for my target loads. I did, and now 12 years and many 4 lb jugs later, I'm looking for something new. What's the latest, greatest powder? What should I get next?

I load 12 guage 7/8ths to 1 1/8th light target loads. 95% of my loads are 1 oz target loads.

I like Clays for being clean burning and supposedly light-kicking. I would get some more, but I thought I try what's new out there.

Thanks,

-John

You won't get much better! Honestly given today's marketplace I would be more concerned about price than making a powder change. If I got a deal on say a 8 lb. keg of Red Dot I would buy it over the Clays because I know that it might be dirtier but it will break just as many 100 straights as will the Hodgdon.

For your stated uses, I would recommend you stick with Clays powder for your clays shooting.

Thanks, fellas, for the suggestions so far. Price isn't a real concern for me, since it seems that all powders are pretty much within 15% of each other in price.

I'm surprised that any of the other powders like Titewad, Titegroup, or International aren't making the list.

What are some of the other classic performers for light 12 ga loads?

Thanks,

-John

Over the years I've loaded Red Dot, 700X, Green Dot, Clays, International Clays and Winchester AA. After trying American Select I haven't used another powder to load 12 gauge.

Promo works great for me.

It's not the cleanest, but with an O/U, I don't much care.

When I run out, I might try something like American Select. But I bought a bunch of Promo.:)
