I just went thru this also. I bought a Bass Pro brand 20-45x50 to upgrade from my cheap Bushnell of the same size. No better, so I took it back and got a Leupold 15-45x60. Maybe slightly better, but not $350 better. Took it back too,and got refund. Bass Pro was nice about it. By this time I'm thinking my old one is looking better. I went to a Sportsmans Warehouse And the guy in the optics dept took me and 3 scopes outside for a view off. The first one, a Swarovski 20-60x65 ($2300) was very clear and sharp. We were looking at a license plate about 300yds. While very clear I could'nt quite make out the little letters on the frame. Next, the big gun, a Swarovski 20x60x80 with Hi Def lenses.($2800) . Sure enough, you could read, "Five Star Ford" like you were standing next to it. It was slightly over budget so we looked thru a Brunton 20x60x80. ($700). You could also read the letters easely, but not quite, but close, as clear as the $2800 one. I think that size matters,as the cheaper one was better than a smaller Swarovski. I saw a thread somewhere that recomended a Celestron 20x60x80 or a Konus20x60x80. I went to Optics Planet website and got the Konus for $214 delivered. It seems to be about as good as the Brunton, but I can't do a sid by side test. I would be curious to try the Celestron as it is even less. What sold me on the Konus was the angled eyepiece and the body can rotate so it can be at eye level on my table Good luck.

Most of the good Highpower shooters at our club use and recommend Konus scopes - except for a few with Kowa or Unertl scopes.

If you want real cheap and are shooting maximum 600 yards, the angle-eyepiece BSA spotting scope I use will be adequate. You can find them for around $100-$125 at e.g. CDNN.

If you can really get a Konus for $214 forget the BSA - unless you are counting every penny. It is adequate for 600 but the clarity and "quality" are poor.

Just my 2¢ and worth every penny. Good luck.

Regards,
Andrew

Edit: Just checked CDNN and they do not sell the angle-eyepiece BSA any more. The sell a straight one for $50. The sell an angle-eyepiece "Target Sports" scope for $70 but I have no experience with that brand.

SHould have kept my mouth shut (hands away from the keyboard).

I've got a cheapo from champions choice. I think it's a 60mm, angled with a 21X eyepiece. It works very well.

My next scope will have an angled long eye relief eyepiece with magnification in the 20-25x ballpark and an 80mm objective.

I have a Celestron Ultima 80. Its a good scope for the money. the 20-60x eyepiece lets you see bullet holes at 200. The 80mm objective lens is is goo d for cloudy days and spotting deer int eh evenings. Its good for reading mirage and seeing the spotting disks at 600. I also use mine for bridwatching (not wussy-a$$ birdwatching... there's a mating pair of eagles that live along the lake near my home that I like to watch. 60x really brings them in close)

There is a 25X75 power, a 90mm objective lens, with pull out sun shade and marketed by several names. It's Chinese made. Cost is $200 to $250. At the 25 to 50 power setting the image is real good. That said I want the Leica for $2800. Which do you think I have?

Champions Choice is a good site for less expensive scopes. I have heard good reviews on the Konus spotting scopes.

If you have a little more money to spend the best prices I have found on Kowa's is at OK Webers. http://www.okweber.com/index.asp

What I don't get is the price of scope stands. Good grief. You should get a 3 legged one so the scope won't fall over.

I've got an Alpen that is pretty good. Or was, until I bought a 6-24 Bushnell 4200. I think I'm going to try the Konus next.

I was in a similar spot a month ago, searching for a scope that would extend my vision for high power shooting.

A couple of things I discovered. First, is that I'm all over the Konus line of scopes. I bought mine from Midway, selecting the 80mm size. I could not be happier spotting for 5.56 or 30 cal shooting.

Secondly is that the tripod is usually an engineering embarrassment. I bought a reasonable camera tripod and am much happier.

The third point is that you should not expect to spot shots at 600m with any sort of a scope. Even at 200m the mirage effect perturbs the target as to making spotting hard. At 600m I assert that 5.56 holes are invisible. That's what God put guys in the pits for. :)

In summary, buy the Konus 80mm, get a new camera tripod, and have reasonable expectations. You'll do just as well as the Kowa guys at a quarter of the cost.

Enjoy,
