Recommendations for First Pistol (maybe CCW)

One of the best 9's I have ever shot is my Sig P6 (8 round mag) and the P30 H&K is also a great shooter and you can get 10 rd. mags. for it but, you will pay more for it. Also you may have to shop around a bit for the P6 as it has almost dried up and unless you can find someone with one they want to sell they may be a bit hard to find. They also make a great CCW gun.

I suggest the CZ P-07 low capacity (10 rd. mags), I see these at the rental counters all the time, the P-07 is a great range gun that carries well. The unique feature about the P-07 is that the safety and decocker are interchangeable in a few minutes with minimal tools. So you can set the P-07 up depending on how you want to use it. I also think it's a good idea to try before you buy with a rental at your LGR.

Starting a newbie with a CCW gun is not a good idea while try to get him trained on good shooting technique and enjoy the sport so he wants to go shoot often. I think first focus on what is a right gun for his shooting and for home defense (caliber & size), then after he is "hooked" and got the marksmanship down, later he can begin to consider a CCW gun.

If there are ranges with gun rental available, he should try different guns in 9mm or 380 and not focused on CCW but to focus on comfort and accuracy while shooting. He will have a better idea what gun he would prefer.

I always recommend a Glock 19. Everyone who has taken the recommendation still has the pistol over many years.

Easy to shoot. Totally reliable. Can carry. House gun. Parts always available. 9mm is fine self defense round.

Just do it!
