My wife wears reading glasses and has difficulty seeing the front sight without the glasses. When she wears the reading glasses she sees two targets down range.

Without the glasses she can clearly see the target but the sights are blurred.

What can be done so she can shoot from 0 to 25 yards?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds as if a trip to the optometrist is in order so that your wife can be fitted for bifocal lenses. I've heard that the newer styles without a visible lens line are better for vision.

If she's unwilling or lacks the money for bifocals, she might try buying reading glasses in the half-moon shape that allow the wearer to gaze over the tops of the lenses for distance vision (think Mr. Cunningham on Happy Days).

For casual work, a pinhole should allow your wife to see the sights clearly and either an in-focus target, or a target only slightly blurred. A pinhole is an easy do-it-yourself project or you can spend money. Check Brownell's and Midway for a couple of the spendier models. There are also some cheaper ones around.

Amerimark has sunglasses that are pinhole arrays. I have never tried them, but have been told they can actually substitute for mild prescription glasses.

Make sure her glasses are on her face straight or adjusted so she sees one target. I use store bought reading glasses (2.75 power) and have the same problem seeing my sights without them. But I can still shoot well enough without them as long as the target is within combat range (7 to 10 yards). Sounds like she has a bit of stimatisum too as I do...

My father just got a new pair of prescription glasses like those a couple of weeks ago. Wearing those, he experienced a dramatic improvement in his groupings at 7 and 10 yards. I'd say his groupings were at least 50% tighter. Needless to say, he was pretty happy with the results!

My last visit to the optometrist I asked for an adjustment in my lenses, to help me see the front sight better. As luck would have it her husband is a gamer (don't remember which one). She made a simple adjustment to the prescription for my no-line lenses. Made a huge difference for me. Tell your Dr. what you are doing, they can fix it for you

As other posters have pointed out there is a variety of alternatives available. One not mentioned requires the help of an optometrist. One can get prescriptions stick ons that go over the lens on the shooting eye. Actually, it is a refinement of the pin hole technique mentioned earlier. Put them on for a shooting session and take them off when done. FWIW.

Duluth Trading Co.

Duluth Trading Company (www.duluthtrading.com) sells safety glasses, clear or tinted, with magnification in the lower part of the lens - 1.50, 2.00, 2.50, or 3.00 diopters - for $19.50. Nothing fancy, and certainly not Gargoyles or Oakleys, but maybe they could help.

One of my instructors swears by computer glasses for shooting. He says that the focal distance for reading on a computer is just the same as the focal distance for the front sight of either a handgun or a rifle.
