Hey all - I know ya'll can help me on this one.

I'm looking for recommendations on two .22 rifles. One pump-action, and one bolt-action.

The only criteria I have for these rifles are as follows:

-Each MUST be under $300
-MUST be available NIB. Not interested in any used guns.
-Each MUST be .22LR. I don't have any room or interest for .22WMR, .17, etc at the moment.

As far as the bolt-action goes, I'd prefer stainless steel, but that's not a huge concern. I would like to limit recommendations to non-single-shot varieties.

Other than that, the field is wide open!

OH! And extra points for mentioning rifles that are (fairly) easily found in-stock at one's local Bass Pro, Dick's, or Wal-Mart. I have no problem with supporting the local shop (and I do as much as possible) but they're special-ordering wait times are more than I can accept for this particular endeavor.

Thanks a bunch!

gunbroker.com has a CZ 452 Trainer - NIB - in your price range. It's just an auction, so who knows what it'll go for. Some CZ expert will tell us the exact difference between that and the one I own - a CZ 452 American with a beautiful stock and a wonderfully smooth action. If I were a decent rifleman I'd even tell you how accurate it is!

I know next to nothing about slide-action rifles. Rossi makes some slide-action rifles based on old-fashioned gallery guns, but I can't find any complete ones. Maybe search gunsamerica.com or something? Good luck.

cz, if you can find it for under 300, will be the best. Otherwise i would go withmarlin or savage,or if you can find them for 300, a new remmy or browning would be excellent.

My CZ 452 American is amazing but will be close to your budget. You may have to shop well or get lucky to find one under $300. If you could go a few dollars more that would be my choice.

I set out to buy a Rossi pump .22 about a year ago. A few years back they used to be ubiquitous at the big Houston gun shows. I hadn't been in a while and was surprised to find none at all.

I asked a dealer about them and he said their QC was very spotty and too many people got burnt on them.

Just an anecdote, YMMV.

I've heard good things about the Taurus but no personal experience here.

Its MSRP is $299.

CZ Model 513. Shouldn't be too hard to find and they are just over $200 new. I love mine and it would be the last gun I ever got rid of.

The Savage MK IIs are decent guns for their price range too. Of course you could move on up the Savage ladder and get one of their higher grade guns for less than $300.

The Marlin Model 25 is another great gun for less than $300. Really good shooters.

As far as a pump goes, the Puma and Taurus guns are pretty good, but I don't know of many places where you could walk in and find them in stock. Hope this helps. Good luck with your search and let us know what you decide on.

There is only one pump to buy and that is the Remington - but specifying NIB and "under $300" eliminates that option for you. And that's too bad because it is one of the finest .22 rifles out there under $1000.

Kingpin008;

I'll add my voice to the other CZ recommendations. Until you get into the very expensive .22's, you're not going to beat it for quality and accuracy. That being said, the Savage MKII is a good gun for the money too. Although I've enjoyed the home gunsmithing I've done on the Savage, and was nicely rewarded also, it did have to be done. Nothing major mind you, just basically finish work.

Shawnee is perfectly correct: "There is only one pump to buy and that is the Remington". And I'm not a fan of Remington's either.

If you can find one of the Henry Firearms pump .22 rifles, it will fit the criteria.
So will the Taurus/Rossi M62 copy of the Winchester pump rifle.
Go this route if you like an exposed hammer.

My opinion is the Winchester M61 pump gun is the only rifle of this action type I would consider but they are discontinued and waaaay over priced for what you would be buying.

Winchester firearms, the new company, not the old one, is offering a Russian built bolt rifle, can't remember the model designation off the top of my head, anyway, this is a very good rifle and well within your $300 price range.

Marlin Model 981T. Outstanding .22 bolt action, tubular magazine. Will shoot .22 short, long and long rifle. Brand new in box will run you $175. I own one and I love it. Never had a single problem in any way and it's a tack driver.
