Just got my Ruger .45ACP today.I need to know what you would consider the best personal defense ammo.I'm talking stop them in there tracks, damn i just got hit by a train ammo.....if there is such a thing

Wow! You will get zillions of opinions on this! My favorite carry ammo is Blackhills 230gr. JHP. They use the Gold dot bullet and their ammo is very reliable.

I would recommend Winchester Ranger +P SXT-HP 230 gr. Item# RA45TP.
This is the non coated version of the "dreaded" Black Talon bullet. This load pushes it at 990 FPS which is cookin' for a 230 grainer. Winchester's tests show expansion to nearly .80 caliber in gelatin covered by 4 layer denim, penetrating to 15.9". It has 6 sharp pointed talons which open when it expands.

It is "law enforcement only" ammo in that Winchester does not allow it's distributors to sell to civilians, otherwise though - perfectly legal. You'll need to shop in the net and at gun shows to find and expect to pay $35+ for a box of 50.

Ditto on the Ranger-T +Ps!!! It is hot but controllable, and very accurate. 100% reliable in my Ruger.

Federal HST 230gr +P. This is their latest generation, replacing Hydra-shok. Do a google search and you'll see they have awesome and consistent expansion, outperforming almost everything else. Speer Gold Dot's are my second choice.

I would give the generic answer of whatever 230gr JHP is reliable in your pistol that you shoot best. Most people say that because it's simple and it's the truth. Another truth is that generally most modern ammunition from popular companies will function at an acceptable level in most modern handguns from popular companies. You still need to verify that though! There are still exceptions to that rule. If you wanted to know what is in my .45 at this moment I would say 230gr Federal Hydra Shok. It's been around a while, proven, feeds 100% in my pistol and it makes me comfortable knowing that. 230gr Gold Dots are great too. I hear lots of good things about the Federal HST. I say go and buy a bunch of each and shoot them....then decide.

Run a few boxes through your pistol to make sure it's reliable, then use Federal HydraShok 185 grain JHP +Ps. It's fairly expensive (about $27 per box of 50), but not nearly so expensive as some of the other +P loads.

I use CCI Brass Blazer for most of my .45 practice.

I've noticed some of the upper end ammo have +P in the description .What does the +P stand for?

+p is a designation for extra pressure. This usually means a higher velocity (not by a whole lot) and more power.

Take a look at Doubletap's ammo, they load Speer Gold Dots to good velocity and you get 50 rounds for about what 20 cost in the Speer box.

I prefer 230 or 200 grains +p in 45 for defense.

The best 45 ACP JHP round according to the testing I have read is the Hornady XTP +P 230gr. If you want a subsonic round the Federal Hydrashok 230gr is great.

For range work I shoot either Blazer Brass or Winchester White Box from Wally's World. Which ever is cheapest.

I dont kow if any cary pistol load is like getting hit by a train, but there are some very good options out there in 45 ACP+P ammo. Carry pistols, being small and convenient, are not all that powerful. Buffalo Bore makes a 230gr. +P Gold Dot load that is doing around 975 fps to 1000 fps out of my 1911s. They also make a 230gr. FMJ-FN at the same speed. I carry the FMJ-FN version if I carry a 45 acp.
