Recommended loads for S&W .40 Self D ???

Many Excellent ones.
Best stoppers. The Federal 165gr HST, Remington 165 Golden Saber, Corbon 165gr, Winchester 165gr SXT. The 155gr Speer Gold dots and 155gr Federal Hydra-Shoks are also Excellent. DPX 150gr is another Excellent load. If you can get your hands on some Winchester Ranger T at 180gr I have read two police articles that say since the improved model came out in May these really Expand great! I cannot get these locally but you can get them through M.A.H. supplies. http://www.mahsupplies.net/ I am currently using the Winchester SXT they are easy to get locally and have always been so accurate and dependable! I prefer the Winchester Ranger T the best, just been to busy to order any lately.

I've done three or four polls on this very topic and the vast majority go with some form of Speer Gold Dot. I like the Double tap rounds as they use Speer Gold Dot bullets.
I would have to agree with every poster thus far, all of these are fine rounds and I own most if not all of them.
Whatever you settle on, make sure you put at least a few boxes through your handgun of choice to make sure it feeds and works well in YOUR firearm.
I've never heard of Barnes. Just my opinion, but I'd go with something a little more well known.

I noticed you listed H&K USP .40 compact. I've had one since 96 when they first came out, and have shot everything they make at one time or another. This pistol will cycle any round that I have shot without jamming. However, accuracy does vary greatly with different rounds. Best accuracy with store bought ammo is with the 155 gr Starfire. For cheap plinking the 180 gr FMJ Magtech have done the best.
Overall best accuracy are the Nosler Competition Handgun 135 gr over 8gr of power pistol powder (1300 fps). These have all of the characteristics of a quick expanding round. Very soft lead and blunt nose. These are very consistent in weight and look a lot like Hydrashocks.
I can't speak for terminal performance on any of these. Sorry, I haven't shot anyone. Everything I have read on self defense says .357 magnum, .40 cal, or .45 cal with a light soft hollowpoint round moving at a high velocity dumps tremendous energy inside of a perpetrator and isn't likely to pass through every wall in your home. The .380 (9mm short) and 9mm hanguns normally need multiple shots to kill.

I do not think the 135gr Nosler would be too much pressure in any well made .40 and especially not an HK.

IMO any of the commercailly made sef defense rounds will work - you reall can't go wrong with corbon, federal, speer - In my MP .40 I have 180 hydrashocks - but I've put all kinds through with similar results. The fun way to do it, is buy a few boxes of each and try them all out - see hwat feels best to you and use that brand. Have fun

At a distance of 8 feet, and when the sights are not used, the accuracy potential of the projectile does not matter. Any hollow-point that functions reliably in your pistol is the same as any other hollow-point at that distance.
For that matter, seing as how the caliber starts with a "4," pretty much any ball ammo that you can deliver to center-mass will probably do a helluva job too.

Bought some Winchester Rangers 155 grain at Cabela's For $11.99 for 50. That should work. All the manufacturers mentioned in the previous post make great ammo for the .40. I have shot all of them except Double Taps and feel that they would get the job done if you do your part.

Recently, at my gun range, they had 4 boxes of Remington JHP's 180gr, 50 JHP's per box, for 13.95 per box, so I bought two boxes and test fired one box, 50 rounds, thru my Px4 and they went downrange, accurate, 100% with no problems.
So, I kept the second box and took it home for my HD/SD ammo reserve.
