So I had an AD today, first time for everything, not proud, we won't go there, however I would like to discuss an ammo concern I now have, the round was a winchester ranger t in .357 sig. When I recovered it inside a book in the same room it hadnt expanded a single bit after going through a couple barriers (old spare couch and ottoman) should I be concerned about the lack of expansion??

No.

JHP bullets expand due to hydraulic pressure inside the HP cavity.

Dry mediums like couch's, ottoman's, and books have no moisture in them to create hydraulic pressure inside the HP cavity.

Had the book been soaked in water, the bullet would likely have expanded just fine.

Ok, good, thanks guys, I'm still really angry at myself but now I have restored faith in my carry round. Has anyone else ever recovered any interesting rounds?

I X-rayed a fellow who had an ND with a .45 Ranger SXT whilst seated in a vehicle. The round went through his thigh, missing his jewels by only a narrow margin and then continued on through the seat. He had a very nasty wound but luckily no vascular injury. All he had was three or four small metallic specks on X-ray. He was patched up and sent home the same day.
The next day he came in and showed me the bullet. It was expanded like it had been fired in ballistic gel. He had recovered it under the car seat.

I have seen many rounds recovered in patients' clothing. It happens more than you would think: the round goes through the patient but is trapped in the clothes at the exit site. Obviously shoes have great potential to trap projectiles but I have seen it with shirts, trousers and light jackets also.

Odd Job---My curiosity now piqued by your last post, did these happen in London in the recent past----where handgun laws are now so strict?? And were they actual handgun ammo wounds? Just a curious mind at play.

It is a myth that JHP's will expand when going through semi-solid or solid objects. The hollow cavity simply fills with the material and that's it. As stated above, it takes hydraulic pressure to expand the bullet.

Since you had an "accidental" discharge, what are you going to do to get your gun fixed?

Yes I recently had a negligent discharge through a few solid objects and the jhp did not expand. The bullet worked as I would have expected it to with what it ce into contact with. Mine was a negligent discharge due to my actions. My gun was not malfunctioning.

Ok ok, I admit my error, I just feel so dirty calling it a negligent discharge, however I'm still kinda mad and very ashamed even tho there's a first time for everything.
