Gents:

I need your valued input. I want to afix a red dot sight scope thingy to my mossberg 500. I keep this shotgun for home defense and for general "all crappolla hit the fan, ala Katrina" work.

What do you recommend? Here's the parameters: I don't want anything cheap, but I don't want the highest-end equipment money can buy. Something in between. Thanks!

Aimpoint T1? Guys, that thing is like $650! That 3x's the price of my shotgun!

Let me be more specific, as I think I unintentionally mislead you. I'm looking for an optic that is reliable for under $100. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I've heard decent things about TruGlo's line of red dots. Check out this one.

Personally, though, if I were looking for a budget optic, I'd save a little more and buy a Vortex SPARC ($199, found here) or Vortex Strikefire ($169, found here). StrikeFire might be a little too tall for a shotgun, though.

Good luck!

You'll get what you pay for, in terms of holding up on a shotgun. There are a ton of chinese made dots out there in your price range. Barska comes to mind. But my advice would be to buy four or five of them if you plan on shooting your shotgun.

I would forget the cheap optic that could fail in your scenarios at the worst time and learn to "run the gun"" - a simple bead is an awesome thing
Get a lesson or three and some range time in for the amount you want to spend - you'll be way ahead of the game

I've made my decision......I will follow oneounceload's advice, keep the bead and get some lessons. The money I was going to invest into an optic will now be invested into a new stock. I'm thinking about the Houge Overmolded stock.

Thanks!!!!!!

Put ghost rings on my mossy 5oo and an ATI stock with pistol grip. It handles great and the ghost rings help accuracy without slowing down targget aquisition. Best of all total price of upgrades about $50.

you could always compromise and go with ghost ring sights................
Ghost-rings or large rifle sights with tritium inserts, IMO, are the best balance in bang for the buck. My "go-to" 870 still has the bead, and I find I'm slower at target acquisition with it than my benelli that sports the large rifle sights. Personally, I haven't seen a difference in speed of acquisition between large rifle sights, dots, or ghost rings. But that may well be that I'm not quite caught up to the sighting systems speed capabilities.

I think in the next couple of days I'm going to order some large rifle sights for my 870.

Next time, try to focus on the target, not the sights - if you are pointing the gun properly, your hands and eyes will put the muzzle where it needs to be
