Red Dot for Ruger Scout Rifle

I'm thinking about trying a RDS for my Ruger Scout Rifle, and was considering either a Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 or a Primary Arms Micro Dot. They are about equal in price, and I don't want to spend much more than $100. My main concern is the ability for these lower end optics to hold up to repetitive .308 recoil. Thoughts?

I cant say anything about the models your looking at, but Ive had a very cheap red dot on my 7-30 waters contender at one point. it held up fine thru a couple hundered rounds. I didnt find it usefull out past 100yds tho, just personal preference.

The recoil would be my biggest concern. The little scout has a modest amount of whack. At my LGS they had a gunsite with a EOTech mounted on the picatinny rail it was pretty nifty. I put a Leupold Scout scope on mine and i could not be happier.

Are you talking about a forward mounted long eye relief scout scope or a traditional scope? If scout scope did you go with the fixed or variable power model, and what rings are you using? I really want the variable power Leupold scout scope but just can't afford it right now.

get your self one of the low priced 1-4 scout scopes to start with. Please explain what you mind by this. The scout rifle is actually very light weight for a .308, so the recoil is not mild by any stretch.

7lbs is pretty much middle of the road for a .308, would be about 8lbs scoped. Im not sure id personally wanna use a cheap EER or LER scope, ive found the farther the occular is from my eye the better the quality of the scope needs to be for ME. I actually have a better quality pistol scope then i do on any of my rifles for just that reason.

I had an Aimpoint ML2 on my Savage Scout for awhile, and it worked fine. Then again, by then, Id learned my lesson and quit buying "cheap" red dots for anything.

If you mount the red dot on a good lever mount, you can swap your scope and red dot at will, with no loss of zero with either. Its going to cost you more to do it though. But its worth it.

A buddy of mine has the Bushnell TRS-25 on his Dan Wesson .44mag. We've put a lot of rounds through that gun with no issues.

I would go with a low power pistol scope on a .308 since you can really reach out and touch something at 300+ yards. I have scout mounts on my Mosin/Nagant and 98K Mauser. Both are topped with Bushnell Trophy XLT 2-6 pistol scopes. The Bushnell has held zero for couple thousand rounds of the past few years. The price of the scope is ~$50 over your budget though. I have low rings on my scopes and there are zero clearance issues. Since this is a pistol scope it is very compact and lightweight.

I went with the LER fixed power and used weaver skeleton mount rings. IMO with a red dot your not gaining anything over a fixed 2.5 power scope. Some field of view but that is about it.

No you won't. Dot scopes do not have near the clearity of standard scopes.

Could also pull the peep and rail off it and just put a regular scope on it. Ruger did leave it set up off there regular rings to be used on the reciever. Its not really light weight anyhow.

What type of mount did you use on the Mosin/Nagant? I have heard many of the scout mounts will strip the screws when used on a Mosin/Nagant. Thanks.

I have used a Burris Fastfire II on my Ruger Scout for hogs.



It worked ok but in certain light conditions (dusk and dawn) there was a great deal of distortion of the target ( I assume it's due to the grade of glass thats used).

The 4 MOA dot does nothing for precision and I find that I prefer a finer aiming point.

I used it for one hunt and promptly removed it.

S&K. It is solid steel with attachment points in the front and rear of the sight base PLUS two set screws. Put a little blue locktite on the screws and that mount ain't going nowhere.

After much debate I decided to go with a traditional mounted scope, 3-9x50. I decided I want some magnification, and I just wasn't feeling the forward mounted scooe and it's lack of options, and both eyes open shooting isnt important to me with this gun. Also I wasn't crazy about putting the extra weight out in front.
