Red dot & magnifier, or scope for 100-300 yards

I was looking at a Leupold VX-R, but after recently buying my first multiple power scope (Nikon P22), I found out the BDC reticle changes values depending on your power level - that really sucks!

Since the VX-R does not have a first focal plane reticle, I'm taking a chance on the Burris 1-4x 24mm Throw Down PCL, which has a first focal plane reticle. Don't know that I like that lever at the back, but if you get the model similar to it without the lever, it has second focal plane reticle.

I handled one at a local Walmart - maybe a little heavy, but I'm going to give it a try.
MSRP is $419, Walmart was $299, I have it backordered (they haven't got their first shipment in yet) @ SWFA Outdoors for $237.
'Course, the Bobro 30mm Extended mount for it is $209!

I chose a Trijicon TR24.

I am very happy with that decision.

The eotech is 1 MOA and although I can't break it down and explain it, even with a 3x magnifier behind it it will still appear 1 inch at 100 yards. I have one and read about it before I bought it. That's why I went with eotech over aim point.
That being said, if I had it to do over again I would have spent the money on a good 1-4 or 2-7 (probably a trijicon 1-4)

I believe incorrect. With an Aimpoint the dot is whatever size it is whether or not it is magnified because, as somebody else mentioned, the dot and the target are equally magnified. This isn't like a SFP reticle on a variable scope, the magnifier is doing just that...magnifying the image your eye sees, so the relationship/proportions don't change.

What you are thinking of is that with an eotech the relative size (MOA) of the dot actually decreases under magnification. There is a technical reason for that I cannot explain.

But for red dots I choose Aimpoint (have an Aimpoint PRO on a second rifle at the moment) because their track record in terms of reliability and durability is exemplary when compared to the often-malfunctioning or broken eotechs.

Also the battery life. I don't like optics you have to turn on, or optics that can die. That's why I have the TR24 (fiber optic and tritum, no electronics at all) and the Aimpoint (3 years battery life of being on 24/7)

I'm taking a chance on the Bushnell 1-4x 24mm Throw Down PCL, which has a first focal plane reticle. Don't know that I like that lever at the back, but if you get the model similar to it without the lever, it has second focal plane reticle.

I handled one at a local Walmart - maybe a little heavy, but I'm going to give it a try.

That Bushnell looks promising, and the throw down lever looks removable. Interesting. I will keep my eye on that one. ;)

Those Burris sights.. I really want to see one in person before spending that kind of $$
You'll probably find 'em in Walmart before anywhere else?

On my 22 ammo hunts, I saw one at a Walmart and got 'em to open the case so I could play with it a bit. I was in another Walmart, and they didn't have the 1-4x model, but they had the more powerful model in the same line.

The guy at SWFA told me they hadn't been released yet - I told him I had handled one at the local Walmart. He chuckled and said they haven't been released to US yet.

I was prepared to spend over $500 for the Leupold VX-R, but am not happy 'bout the second focal plane reticle, so for $237 (assuming I ever get it), I'll take a chance.

I managed to dig up a few tests on pre-production units or early releases, and reports sounded promising, but 'Net reports / reviews seem to be going downhill lately? Folks just don't seem to be as critical as they need to be when reviewing stuff these days.

main problem with a scope is the eye relief, the eye box where you get a full view. head placement has to be in the right spot like any other scope. if you are in a match where you are rapid firing multiple targets at 50 yds to me it is a hinderence. I got a nc star 2x7 ill. reticle pistol scope and put it on the forward rail. it is great talk about shooting with both eyes open you always have a full view no matter where head is

I have a Trijicon TR24G on one of my rigs in a LaRue QD mount. It does add weight, but a 1x its run like a RDS and at 4x it capable of good accuracy out to the 300 yard line at my range. Like most other Trijicon optics, the quality of the glass is impressive, crystal clear and quite sharp.

Was out on an ammo run today and see our local Walmart now has the Burris 1-4x Throw Down PCL - that makes two Walmarts where I've seen it.

I think a fiber optic front site on am AR is just as good as 1x red dot no batteries much slimmer profile bomb proof irons

I bought an eotech/3x magnifier. It sucks in lowlight conditions. I shoulda gotten a 1x4 that had good light gathering capabilities. Primary Arms makes some good, affordable products. Bushnell has an affordable 1-4 also

I work evenings/nights and use an aimpoint micro with a 3x magnifier in a flip mount. I have had no issues using the set up in any lighting condition I would be comfortable identifying a target in.

The magnifier adds some weight but it is easy to take off if I don't want it on.

I was talking about trying to use that on hogs under a full moon. A scope with good light gathering capability works much better than the eotech/3x magnifier that I have.

If you're trying to gain entry into Rambolistas Club, then get the Eotech, Aimpoint, etc. Also, use the words, "Noveske" and "LaRue" in a few posts.

If you want to hit small targets at a distance, get a good variable "conventional" scope.

I'd love an aimpoint but not sure if I want to spend that much. I've been looking at the Lucid HD7 lately. The Gen III seems interesting and maybe something to consider. There are 2x and 1-5x magnifiers available for it too.

Dots are too big for most purposes involving range and accuracy. Scopes aren't quite as fast for some folks. Figure out if you want fast and open group or slow and small group.
