Red dot or fiber optic sights?

I just picked up a 617-6, and the stock sights are gonna have to go. I havent taken it to the range yet, but I already know my tired old eyes are not gonna like them. So I'm contemplating replacing the stock sights with fiber sites similar to these:

Or putting a red dot on. I already have the red dot on a 10/22, and all I need is the mount. So It seems like it would be easier to do this first, and if I dont like it I dont have a lot invested, just the mount.

The 617 will be used mostly as a range toy by myself and my sons. I may one day try bullseye, or similar comp shooting, but not sure.

Thought, experiences, opinions welcomed.

Get what you feel most comfortable with. With that said, I like red-dot, but I also shoot iron sight well.

Regretfully, there are not many aftermarket short sights for the K22 family. Whatever you get, make sure everything matches up height wise, or else your POA may be way off.

Depends on what you want.

Fiber sights (especially with tritium) offer most of the low-light functionality of a red dot without the weight or bulk. They don't acquire quite as fast, but they don't obstruct your vision, either.

A red dot is nice, used by a lot of match shooters for a reason. However, they make the gun a good deal heavier and bulkier -- i.e. they kinda sabotage some of the best characteristics of a Smith.

I have installed two fiber optic front sights on a pair of DW's. Still have the white outline rear blade. They sure help me. I have several pistols with just plain black front sights and they are getting difficult for me to get a good sight picture. I'm going to install inserts with the Brownells kit.
