Heyo, I have a s&w N frame 25 that I'd like to refit a fiber optic front sight to. What are the options for this? I've included a pic of it, and it's 1/8" wide. Not sure what height I'd need or any other considerations, but I sure would love to have a nice bright dot up there. Thanks.

There are a number of options, but of those I've tried, I like the HiViz fiber optics best, as the FO is somewhat protected.

SDM makes a nice bright FO, but the FO is unprotected, and I have broken an unprotected (not SDM) FO on several occasions.

On sights with an unprotected FO, the FO itself is easily replaced in minutes if it breaks, whereas the entire HiViz sight would need to be replaced in the unlikely event it breaks. Having had both types, I prefer not having to deal with a broken FO in the first place, so I think the HiViz is the better route.

You can have your cake and it it, too, though, if you have a gunsmith install a Weigand interchangeable sight base. Once installed, you can swap sights (including a HiViz) in seconds if it breaks and/or you prefer a different color.

As far as sight height, you typically measure from the top of the barrel rib to the top of the sight.

BTW, the sight pin (and it's hole) isn't 1/16", which is what most people seem to assume. It's a wee bit smaller. Using a 1/16" punch to drive the pin out can result in a stuck pin, and a transverse bulge across the barrel rib.

Yeah thanks for that tidbit about the hole size. Luckily I noticed it seemed bigger than 1/16 and used a smaller drill bit to push it out easily.

I saw the SDM they look nice. Funny though they offer them in .250 or .300 and the smith appears to be .278" so kinda between. I think I'll try lower version first.

I don't really want to modify the pistol at this point, it's still gaining value pretty rapidly.

Why do you like the Dawson over the SDM?

I'm considering trying to make my own, which is dumb, because the last thing I need in life is another project.

EasyHit makes these. I’ve used them in Steel Challenge and for hunting.
You’d think the plastic would be fragile, but I haven’t had so much as a chip or crack.
The sights aren’t shown on EasyHit’s website. You have to call and the guy who runs the place isn’t eager to fill orders.
Be persistant. It’s worth it.
