Hello folks, I just received a Burris FastFire Red Dot Reflex sight to mount on the Weaver mount of my Marlin Camp Carbine 45. My question though is where to I put it? There doesn't seem to be any specific information out there.

Generally, is there a rule of thumb as to where these are mounted? I don't think the distance from my eye is an issue as they work from a large range of distances from your eye. But is there a better place to mount them in relation to the action's location? Should I center it over the bolt, put it in of it front, or behind....? I'm totally in the dark about this.

Any help would surely be appreciated!

I would put it as far foreword as possible so you can see around it.

To far back negates the principal advantage of a red-dot, which is unlimited field-of-view, both through it, and around it.

I agree with RCModel. When I had one on mine, I had it mounted as far forward as possible. Worked out fine.

stupid red dot question since we are on this topic.

Can someone briefly explain the principle behind it?

Does the red dot take the place of a reticle in a conventional scope, or do you line the dot up with the front site? Or do you simply put the red dot on the target?

Sorry if this qualifies as a thread hijack.

Since it is my thread, no your not hijacking.

A red dot is superimposed on a piece of optical glass. You look through the glass, kinda at a distance, not like a scope. While keeping both eyes open, put the dot on the target and pull the trigger. That's it. It gives you the advantage of keeping both eyes open, keeping a complete field of view and you save the time of lining up your sights. It is actually a very fast method of target acquisition.

I know that sounds simple but I am simple and that's the best way I can describe it. If there is someone who can describe it better then me, feel free to jump in. I don't mind at all.

I think you guys have increased my understanding of this gadget.

Thanks!

Made me really want one. Now to find one I can afford.
