It's time to start looking at some red dot sights and I need some references and experiences with them. I am looking for no magnification and parallax free for handguns mostly but also AR or M-1.

I've looked at J-point
Nikko-Sterling
Aimpoint T-1 and R-1
Meprolight (no batteries is a big plus)

Does anyone use a red dot on a carry gun?

What have you used?
What have you not liked?
What has worked well for you?

Thanks in advance.

Least expensive excellent quality red dot I would buy is the Millett SP1. I wouldn't use a red dot on a carry gun, but I have a Millett on a Browning Buckmark .22. It's a great combo for plinking and informal target shooting. Available at MidwayUSA:

At the other end of the spectrum, the Aimpoint CompML is an excellent scope for an AR, but I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money for a handgun scope. Other's opinions may differ.

It makes no sense at all to install a red-dot device on a handgun for daily carry.

Gunfights happen at 8 feet. If you take the time to use any sort of sights at that distance, you will shoot second.

I like the EOTECH for a short range carbine.

red-dot

I have a truglo that seems to have something that a lot of rd's seem to lack, strong light even in daylite. I can use mine at the 9 setting in strong daylite, and it holds zero also with almost 500 rds fired.

I have an inexpensive eBay 4-reticle reflex red dot that has been used on my Hi-Point carbine and is currently on my AK. It's the exact same one Sportsmans Guide sells for $39.00, + delivery on sale. No problems, and you can get them for less than $35.00 delivered! I plan on getting several more for other guns I have...

The J-Point could be useful on a carry gun if they made a "tunnel" in the mount so you could look thru it to see the front sight as a back up. The battery and its holder is way to sketchy to ever trust on a carry weapon IMHO. Although I've three on my favorite range guns -- RIA 1911, and Armscor 1911-A2 widebodies in .45 and 9mm. They are great at the range and very fast on steel plates but the batteries stop working at random often enough I'd not trust one for carry as they currently are made.

How much are you wanting/willing to spend?

If you aren't wanting magnification, I don't see how anyone could say the Eotech isn't the best.

I am talking about for carbines, I have no idea for hanguns...You'd be better of just getting a laser sight.

Laser sights also have battery and alignment issues, although Crimson Trace laser grips seem to work pretty well, but the main problem is the the laser dots are nearly invisible in bright light. Main advantage to lasers is the iron sights remain unchanged as a backup.

I've CT lasergrips on my S&W SC360 J-frame. Held up well so far and its my favorite carry if I'm going to be out well past dark.

can't go wrong with a Eotech

But if you want another good red dot with a 1 moa dot go with Nikon.

DO NOT mount a sight on an M1, its a costly waste of time.

I jsut mounted a ATN Ultra sight on the ole ladies SKS.

Like it better than the EoTech

I have a TruGlo on my AR as well. I have it on a quick release mount, and remove it when I clean my gun. My friend has a EOTech and has had to rezero twice. I've got nearly 1,000 rounds and have never had to rezero. For what I do, plinking and hunting, the TruGlo is just fine. My only complaint is that I forget to turn it off sometimes and the battery dies.

I mounted a Tasco Propoint on a Marlin 1894 using a weaver mount. It works great for quick shots in thick woods. I used it on a Yugo 5.45 AK too.
I see no need to have one on a daily carry handgun.
