Betcha can guess
OK, the wife asked me the other day what I'd like for Christmas. A couple of months ago I stumbled onto a 2 gun match, and many of the guys were using reddot optics on their AR platforms. So, I'm thinking of having her get me a reddot, but I don't know the first thing about them.

So, with that said (and I know it's prolly already been done a hundred times now), how about some learned discussion on what to look for in such a scope. FWIW, I've got a carry-handle AR, and I'd like to have a mount that doesn't block the iron sights.

Being in the business, I've used most of the EOTech holographic sights, plus most of the Aimpoint and Trijicon reflex sights, and I've used them extensively for years. IMO, any of them will do very well for you, as would any other high quality "red dot" sight (some of them have triangles or chevrons instead of dots, and some of them are yellowish or orange instead of red).

For a combination of low weight, easy controls, ultra-long battery life and low sight height, a tubular sight like any of the Aimpoint Comp series sights up to and including the CompM3 and ML3, on the ARMS#16A mount, will do you nicely. I like the 2 MOA dot over the 4 MOA dot, but either one is good.

The 16A is a 30 mm wide ring that fits directly into the carry handle and has a sighting tunnel through which you can use the irons. It works with any Comp series sight, or similar 30 mm sight.

I've tried several of the "forward carry handle" (or "gooseneck") mounts and I have not been impressed with their stability. They do get the sight down low where you want it, but if you want that configuration I say a good rail forend is a better, though more expensive, alternative. The latter would also make for a nice configuration with the EOTech sights, which have the best reticle, IMO-- a one minute dot surrounded by a 65 MOA circle.

There you have it. Go for quality and you will not be disappointed (or rather, have your wife go for quality and she will not be disappointed in your reaction - she does love you, doesn't she? ; ) There are some knock-offs out there that are cheaper, and some people like them fine. I in my admitted prejudice prefer to use the real deal.
