Redfield Peep Sight Screw Size

I've just installed a Lyman/Redfield receiver peep sight on a Stevens 22LR that was my father's, that I first learned to shoot with. I say Lyman/Redfield because the it is cobbled together with the base from Lyman and a Redfield elevation vernier slider. I need a higher front globe, which I've just ordered and will have in a couple days.

I want to move the windage scale a bit and want to know the thread size for the screw that mounts the scale to the front of the receiver. I have the screw, which mics as a #1 but does not fit either the 64 or 72 tpi holes on my thread checker plate. What I need is to know the tpi of the screw so I can try to find a tap.

I could just use a standard #1 screw, but have not found one that "looks" right.

Steve Earle responded, provided the info that 1-56 screws exist, but doesn't have any #1 screws of any thread pitch. I checked the screw with my screw thread checker plate, and sure enough, it fits the 2-56 hole, albeit loosely. I did find some 1-56 brass slotted screws and some 1-56 taps. Smallest I've D&T'd is 2-56 and did thousands of them way back when working my father's shop. I have the means and skills to D&T something this small in my own shop, but not quite inclined to try.

Making a replacement scale is a decent idea. I've never made any graduated markings and these are quite small, so less likely to tackle that one.

Most likely, I won't worry about it. I can probably set the front sight over to compensate, once the new, higher globe gets here tomorrow, but I think it would have to be set over enough it would look funny - probably shoot fine, just look funny.

Received and mounted the new front globe sight, (Lyman 17AUG .584 High). Thrilled with the results. I had never shot peep sights before. Rifle is old and of nominal production quality probably (Stevens 22LR, Model 66-B). As mentioned, it was my father's and is the first gun I ever fired, sometime in the early 1950s. The higher front sight made it all come together. Range 30yds. Aquila Super Extra is my go to ammo for 22LR but I typically try a number of other brands/types. The others were blah, but the Aquila shot very well in this rifle with this sight setup. I might be shooting this setup better than my Ruger American with Leopold Freedom scope.

My shooting buddy was there helping out and to shoot his 6.5 Swedish Mauser with a Williams receiver peep. He was not having much luck and then thought of trying the Lyman .494 front globe I'd taken off the Stevens. Made all the difference, he started shooting far better. The Williams is manual adjust for both axes, so it was a little rougher getting it close, but he is really happy with that rifle now.

Better hardware stores have gun screw assortments. They have a thread pitch tool to purchase also.

I was vaguely aware that some have gun screw assortments. But, alas, I am way out in rural NE Oregon and there are at best some modestly stocked chain hardware stores. I have two thread pitch gauges, imperial and metric, that I use in my machine shop, but they only have the nominal, common two sizes, fine and coarse and only go down as far as #2. I love going to the old, classic, industrial hardware store in Portland. I'll have to ask if they have gun screws next time I'm there.

With the new front globe, the rear sight scale is really a non-issue at this point.
