I purchased a Ruger Redhawk in .44 magnum as an overkill (for my needs) large bore revolver. At the time, I compared all the usual suspects (629, RH, SRH and even a Raging Bull.) The Taurus wasn't in the same league as the other three guns. The S&W was nice but the Rugers felt better in my hand overall. I liked both the Redhawk and Super Redhawk about the same. The SRH did have a SLIGHTLY better trigger but the Redhawk felt better balanced. The deciding factors were aesthetics and barrel length. I wanted a 4-6" barrel which wasn't available on the SRH and most will agree the SRH isn't the most attractive looking revolver. So, I bought the Redhawk with 5.5" barrel.
The gun has shot wonderfully. The only thing I wanted to change was the grips. The recoil wasn't too bad BUT they were VERY slippery. I tried the Hogue Monogrip but found it too thin and the palm swell in an awkward location. The Hogue Bantam was just terrible in my hand too. The Pachmayr Decelerators were squishy and fit poorly at best. (They had huge 2mm+ gaps at the seams.) The Pachmayr Presentation grips were okay but felt too short at the bottom.
My next step was going to be to have the factory wood grips checkered to make the less slippery. Then I stumbled upon some old threads and pics about the now discontinued Uncle Mike's/Butler Creek grips. They looked pretty decent and after a quick search I found that Numrich still had some NIB for sale for pretty cheap. So, I figured why not give them a try before paying to have the factory ones checkered.
Well, I am very glad I did. They are wonderful. The fit is perfect and the recoil is significantly reduced too. Finally, I found a set of rubber grips that are an improvement over the factory wooden grips.
