I wanna dial down my 30-06 in the recoil department and was looking at the Hodgdon youth loads with H4895 and was thinking it would be possible to substitute a 130 TSX for the 130 hornady they have listed? Has anyone attempted this and if so with what luck?

Also had a thought to try the 110 grain TSX so any experience with that in the 30-06 would be great. I was thinking it would be too short to seat with enough neck tension?

Thanks in advance guys

The summer he was 11 years old, I started using the following load for my son's pre 64 30-06 which he inherited from his grandfather. We used the load to shoot prairie poodles and it broke him in nicely with the weapon, which he used the following year with much stouter loads for deer.

26 gr of IMR 4227 and 110 gr Hornady SP

Also had great results with
130gr Hornady SP - SR4759 - 32gr - 3.235 OAL - 2489fps - 1.0" @ 100yds

1. If you want less recoil, then go with a lighter bullet but with TSX bullets you probably shouldn't reduce the load for said bullet if you want optimal accuracy.

2. If you want to shoot 110 gr. TSX bullets, just seat them so enough bullet is in the case to hold them. TSX bullets like a little jump anyway and it may not hurt accuracy at all.

3. I use the same load with a variety of bullets that are of the same weight (165 or 168 gr.) that include TSX bullets in my 30/06; no adjustment in powder charge was needed.

Get the Hodgdon 2009 manual. There's an article in there with reduced loads using the TSX bullets. I load these locally for youth hunters and they report good results. Takes the listed cartridges down to a .243 recoil.

+2 for the 2009 Hodgdon Reloading Magazine. Great article on M.E.L.'s (moderately effective loads. I have used the data for 130 gr. TSX in .270 win and 150 gr. TSX in 30-06. Grouping was good on both. I'm going to BassPro this weekend and hope to pickup some 130 gr. TSX in 30 cal.

I have the 2006 and 2008 manuals. I wait 2 years between usually to avoid too much of the same material. I looked online to try and buy a copy but it's out of print for the 2010 catalog.

The latest Speer manual has reduced loads for most calibers as well. I'm going to be loading some reduced recoil .30-06 loads for my wife this year. She's 105 pounds and I would imagine full throttle loads would punish her. I've heard the loaded down stuff recoils no harder than a .243 win.

It turns out that the 09 manual is out of print for the 2010 manual. Would someone be nice enough to scan or copy down the info?? I would appreciate it greatly.

Personal opinion is the TSX is not a good choice for reduced loads. The bullet is designed for high velocity impact and will not expand reliably at lower velocity. To be honest I don`t see a need for this type bullet in any load where muzzle velocity is under ~2800 fps. I have seen reports they really need a impact velocity of around 2200 fps to open, a Hornady SP will reliably open at 1700 fps.
Again JMO. If shooting deer with a magnum with a 3300 fps MV or a -06 with 150gr or less at "just off the muzzle" ranges I would concider a TSX or other Monometal bullet. Otherwise a Hornady SP, Nosler BT, Speer Hot Core would be my 1st choice.

Well alot of my shots are under 100 yards (as alot of hunters are accustomed to) and barnes says they open up at lower velocity as well. I'm not looking for a totally anemic round just 30-06 light lol
