Can anyone suggest a reduced
load for 9mm with a 115gr FMJ bullet? I would like it to be able to
cycle a Glock 19 and Sig P228. This load is for my wife. She is small
framed and I want to minimize recoil at first.

I have looked at numerous loading books, but I would love some suggestions. I have on hand some AA#5, AA#7, Unique, Bullseye,
and HP-38.

Much appreciated :)

Jacka L ope -

I think he is looking for some of us to share a light kicking recipe, that's "but what".

Sublime41,
I usually use Power Pistol or VV320 (when I can get my mitts on it) but I also have experience with Bullseye & 9mm 115 gr since I always have that on hand...

Bullseye - 4.5 gr - Remember, don't go too low so the pistol will cycle. Bullseye can be a bit snappy in 9mm as you raise the grains

FWIW: Power Pistol - 5.8 - 6.0 gr is a nice place to start for mellow target loads that can be bumped to 6.7 gr as she progresses.

I have honestly never used AA#5 or AA#7 or Unique on 9mm so sorry I couldn't help more with that.

There are alot of cool guys in The HighRoad Crew that I am sure will chime in tomorrow since it is late. I just got in from the cave as I was seperating my new loot of brass I scored at the range today. I love free brass!!!!

Cheers, Mate

Igbloader,

Ahhhhhhh, range score. I want to take down the sign at our range that says, "police your brass." I am always happy to clean it up.

Thanks for the helpful answer. I have loaded tens of thousands of 9mm rounds. I always load them stout because I like them that way and they cycle my P7M13 the best. What I have not done is loaded light rounds for my wife. I would rather get some suggestions here then go through countless powder combinations if not necessary.

My experience has been that different powders have different characteristics, therefore I didn't just pick the lowest load and begin.

Your wife will be fine with the Glock 9mm.

My daughter at 4'11'' 100 lbs prefers one of my 1911's in 45 to any of my 9's or other 45's. And that is all with factory 230gr FMJ.

In fact on her 21st birthday she will get a Colt Government model set up for her. Short trigger and thin grips on it etc.

Don't mess with daddy's little girl's. And her older sister is the tough one, starts Grad school at UT Austin in August. The oldest has been in the Peoples Republic of California since leaving Manhattan several years ago. So no guns for her, she just uses her Delica Spyderco's. She has trained with them, and is good with them. Oh, her preference for a handgun is the Glock 30, in 45acp. I offered to get her 'better' knives than the Delica's. Her response was, "Daddy, I trained with these and I am going to stick with them." Smart girl, that one.

As I said, Don't mess with Daddy's little girls.

Go figure.

Fred

My powder puff 9mm load is 3.6gr Clays. Gives me a very consistant 1050fps, with 115gr fmj slugs. Very clean and very, very soft. Cycles my CZs very well, but if you limpwrist my G19, it will stovepipe, but that was with my 9yr old shooting it.:)

Just noticed your on hand powders. Usually, the fastest powder will give the least recoil. I would reduce the bullseye, per lgbloaders recommendation.

"Powder Puff".... that's what I have been looking for. I think I have some Clays in the back of my cabinet.

FWIW, my wife is about 4'9" and 100 pounds. She says she likes the way the Glock feels in her hands. That she never says about me. She actually likes the way the Glock feels better than our Sig P230 in .380

I like just under 5g of Universal Clays for light 9mm loads that will cycle the action every time and don't burn too dirty. I had trouble with Bullseye cycling. Light loads of 231, AA#5, and Unique were too dirty for me. Never tried AA#7.

I don't have the powder charge numbers at hand, but I once worked on some light loads for a Lady to shoot a P225. Most manual starting loads are 10% below maximum. I found that MY gun would function at 12% off, but not 15%.

I really like V320, problem is that I can never find it. I have about 2.4 lbs of it left and I am worried that I will not be able to find more before I run out. I have not been able to find anyone who has it in stock for the last 2 months.

Just how low you can load will depend on the guns and how she holds them. I'd use the HP38 (Win231) starting around 3.5grns and see if the guns function for her.

If they operate well, go down a tenth or two and keep trying this until they start to choke. Bump back up a couple of tenths and you have the minimum load just for Her!

I would also recommend a light load of Titegroup, two-tenths less than Rusty's load.

However, the lightest and softest load in my Glock 19 was a 147grain bullet (yes!) with a light load of Clays -- only 2.7 grains. I know it sounds weird, but it's the softest Glock 9mm load I ever experienced and it cycled that pistol very nicely.

Nice Tactical move, Mate

Sublime 41,

I forgot to mention to you that it is a good tactical move to get your wife into shooting. Here's why...

#1 - You will have to buy her another firearm and another if you play your cards right, plus some rifles as well.

#2 - It will be that much easier to buy reloading tools since "this will help us save money" 'cough... cough...

#3 - When you get "her" all the new stuff you want, you can help her lose interest and it's all yours...

Just kidding:neener:

4gr Unique will cycle any semiauto I've tried it in (including Sigs and HPs and CZs and M&Ps and 92Fs and..) and is very mild.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I have the next few days off and will try a few loads and see how they work.

My wife has been very understanding about this gun thing. I have creatively melded reloading and gun buying to mix her up. She now has me pegged.

THANKS IGBLOADER....
she read your post and now is wise to bullet number 3. She told me, "Don't worry, I have no plans to lose interest." She had a nice chuckle. I just bought a CMP M1 Carbine and a Desert Eagle. Both were of course "the last gun." I am sorry to say that is the last time I can play that card, same with all the money saving reloading stuff. Mrs. Happy posed a question I found unsettling. She ask me why I bought so much surplus ammo from CMP if I saved so much from making my own.

I want my wife to embrace and participate in all of the shooting related stuff..........I just don't want her learning toooooo much. I can only get so creative with my rationalizations :D

Okay,
rigged up the 550 with Clays and some 115 FMJ 9mm.

Srarted at 3.6 grains and in the Glock it was one stovepipe or failure to feed after the other. I finally worked up to a load of Clays at 4.4 gr. The Glock cycles fine and the recoil should be quite managable for Mrs. Happy.

I will load 500 rounds up in the A.M. and off to the range we shall go. I don't think I will bother chronographing them.

FWIW, I stuck with the clays as I had the Dillon dialed in for it. Call me lazy.

Appreciate the help !!

I have loaded some very light 9x19 loads using 115gr bullets and under 4.0gr of N320. I loaded them down around 85 PF (power factor). I found that most stock semiautos I tried them in would not operate properly until I got up to about 100 PF. Under 100 PF, replacing the recoil spring with a lighter one can allow the gun to cycle even with very light loads.

I've loaded really light loads for the CZ and BHP with reduced recoil springs. 3.4 Clays is real good, you seem to have a stout recoil spring in the Glock. Can you get reduced Wolf springs? CZs have the built in advantage of coming with weak springs from the factory.

Yea,
that Glock is tight as heck. It is new and I only bought it because I got rid of one years ago. I really don't want to put a new spring in it because I am currently out of any excuses to buy gun related stuff.

I think that light of Universal will work for now, if not I will consider other options.

Hey Sublime,

I just saw the message to me and I have to say... Just don't let her practice too much. I don't know what it is about women but once they learn how to shoot, they can ussually shoot circles around men. I think they may be more patience or something but my wife is very proud of the fact that she can shoot my 1911's better than me!!! And it pisses me off because she's right!

I forgot to add... They have good memories, don't they!!! I am still laughing about her question of buying surplas ammo if you save money loading.... LOL .... Aren't they the best :)
