I have an H&R 158 Topper with a 20 gauge barrel and a .22 Hornet rifle barrel, which wears an old Weaver K4. I figure the gun was made in the '70s. I recently decided to give it a little fluff and buff.
The factory wood finish was serviceable but bland. I stripped if off with sandpaper, then stained the hardwood stock and forearm with Minwax cherry stain. This didn't come out as dark as I wanted, so I went over it with some Fiebing's dark brown leather dye. The combination gave it a nice brown finish with a little red tint.
I also removed the factory recoil pad. It may have been soft at one time but it hasn't been for several years. Rather than trying to grind a new pad to fit, I picked up a size small Pachmayr Decellerator recoil pad, which fits the stock perfectly. The slip on pad is secure but is easily removed, which lets me access the storage cavity I made inside the stock.
There should be enough room inside for a pull through and a bottle of oil.
I also added quick detachable Allen sling swivels. After some rummaging, I found a Chicom SKS sling in my gun stuff and added it. The final touch will be a slip on butt cuff to hold some spare ammo.
It'll make a nice, light gun capable of hunting anything here in PA.
