I keep finding all kinds of delightful pics of CZ vz82s that have been refinished, either with GunKote or some kind of cold blue.

1) How do you get the old finish off? I have no clue what chemical was used, so I don't know what method to use.

2) To refinish a gun, how far past field stripping do you need to go in terms of disassembly? My understanding is that the vz82 is a PITA to reassemble if you break it down all the way.

Hey Dovedescending, how is that refinishing project going?
I took the original finish off with a brass wire wheel, then 320, 400, 800 & 2000 sandpaper, then hit it with a polishing wheel.
I'm midstream in the process myself and have discovered what a rat-bastard the seer/ejector/autosafety is to reassemble. :banghead:
Anyhoo, thought I'd post a couple pics in case anybody's interested. I'd like to compare notes & see some pics of your cz too.
Thanks for posting the resources, GreySmoke2. There was one I had not yet seen, and may yet have the key to getting this thing back together.

Thought about leaving it polished, but can't resist a deep shiny blue.

Word of experience, don't take apart the trigger, there is a little spring that hold the sear and hammer safety. Supposedly it is tensioned by putting the Hammer Block back in just right, but if you don't do it right, it can double, slip the hammer, go SAO, and all the things that happen when the sear doesn't work.

Otherwise, sandblasting and Gunkote, I use a toaster oven with fiberglass insulation and a oven thermometer.

OH and if like AlphaShifter and me you do monkey with the little parts, a tooth pic, lollipop stick to temp hold part together, a dental pick and a third arm are useful in getting the seer spring in the channel.

My best bet was the lolly pop stick to hold it all together, then holding with my feet ( a vise might work, but I had to keep moving the frame to get the right angle) I put the Hammer Block Safety back in, the with a strong light through the magwell, I used a pick to slip the spring in the channel as I slipped the safety back and down at about a 30' angle, like I said the third arm would be handy. The hole in the flat portion of the safety is to see if the safety end of the leg is in the channel.

It only took me about 4 hours to figure out what I had done wrong and then put it back together right. Good luck
