I have previously reformed .221 Fireball from .222 Rem cases. They came out beautifully. I annealed the necks and shoulders and then ran them through the .221 sizing die. Voila!

This time I'm getting "crinkles" in the new shoulder!

Ideas? Suggestions?

Agree with what aka108 said. If you can post a picture so we can get a better look.

Some brass necks down better than other brass, especially if it's been reloaded a few times. You might try annealing them a little less, or a little more, and see if that makes a difference. Also try some once fired brass that hasn't been annealed.

The lube could also be an issue, so you've got a couple of different areas to look at.

I neck down .45 acp brass to .400 Cor-Bon, and 10mm brass to 9x25 Dillon. I get much better results when I don't anneal the brass. I had some new Norma brass that split every time I tried to neck it down, so I changed to another brand of brass and the splitting problem went away.

Hope this helps.

Fred

This latest brass (R-P) came from the same batch as the previous.

I annealed until I got that light blue color and quenched them.

Just reformed a bunch of 270 to 8mm and ran in to a fine line with annealing to soft wrinkle just below the shoulder to hard spliting the neck. What worked well was removong the sizing ball from the die run it through cut the case reassemble the die run it through again bada bing.
