My grandfather acquired several hand guns during his time in WWII, however he has since passed away. These guns are being willed down to my father, who really isn't interested in guns, but will hold onto these as heirlooms. I've let him know that I would love to hold onto them, I've only seen them once as a child as my grandmother doesn't really keep old WWII guns laying around her house. I know one is a Luger and maybe a 1911 is in there. My question is, how would myself or my dad go about registering these guns? I have a FOID card btw.

As long as you live outside of Chicago I don't believe there is any handgun registration in Illinois. Inside Chicago you can't have them at all.

The FOID card is all you need.

Don't register them, you don't need to. Chances are you don't live in Chicago because you have them still. You have the FOID card, you are fine.

That's what I was hoping to hear, I do have FOID and I live in southern IL, across the river from St. Louis, I wasn't sure if you need to register new guns or go through an FFL even if it was family.

Thanks guys

Best bet is to check with you municipality's law enforcement agency. I live in Palatine and there is no registration requirement. I have my FOID.

There aren't any municipalities in the state that require registering of guns except for Chicago and maybe Oak Park, Evanston/Morton Grove. If you live in the city or a NW burb that has bad laws, then get out...I am working on it!

Nope, I grew up in Naperville, but moved down to Belleville after I graduated college. I already knew not to bring a gun in Oak Park/Chicago anyway.

Outside of Cook County it's still a free country.

With your FOID card you're good to go and don't need anyone's approval to own and shoot a handgun.

My son lives a bit East of you in Mascoutah, over past Scott AFB. Lots of empty land out there to plink in. Have fun terrorizing empty cans.

The only thought is that, if they haven't been fired recently, you may want to have a gunsmith check them out for safety purposes.

Sounds good, thanks everyone for the quick answers. I wasn't 100% on the laws regarding gifted or willed guns so this clears it all up.

BTW Don, I live in Belleville, but my kids would go to Mascoutah schools. That's how close I am to it.
