Pawn shop down the road has a 3 1/2 inch chambered 870 Express (Super Mag)in 85% or better condition for $165. Wasn't looking for an3 1/2 inch though---I only plan to shoot 2 3/4 inch. Didn't say OK because I wanted to research the pros and cons of the longer chamber with the shorter rounds. Am I risking failures to feed with the longer chamber and 2 3/4 inch?

I have a Benelli Nova SP, all of which come chambered for 3 1/2" rounds. It has eaten solely 2 3/4" rounds since it came out of the box. It's never had a failure to feed or other malfunction attributable to the ammunition (it had a funky trigger problem for a little bit breaking in, but other than that, nothing).

They know guns chambered 3" and 3 1/2" are mostly going to be shot with standard 2 3/4"..... it's just nice to have the option. It'll feed fine, or something is screwed up with the gun. Check the shell lifter, and the action, make sure the safety works, etc.

It'll work. Buy it,it's a decent deal.

2 3/4" stuff works in longer chamber and actions. So will the Euro and Brit 2 1/2" shells. Shorter than that gets dicey.
