Reload experience with 300 Mag

I will be getting into reloading after Christmas and was wondering if anyone could tell me the best powder, primer, etc to use when reloading my 300 Win Mag. This will be my main rifle, and seems that not a lot of people around me that reloads owns one.

The rifle is a Stevens Model 200, so I assume whatever ingredient seems to favor the Savage family rifles.

I would like help with:
Powder
Primer
Casings (that have worked well after SEVERAL loadings)
Bullets (best grouping for deer, would like to stick with 180gr.)

I have had good luck with VV powders, CCI LRM primers, Federal Once Fired cases and Lapua Scenars.

The Scenars would be the wrong choice for deer though. It is an easy rifle to load for and tweak.

I don't have a 300 WinMag, but I do have a 308 Norma mag and the loads are pretty close. All I can suggest is a quality or premium 180 gr bullet with a slow burning powder like one of the 4831's or IMR7828 and the primer of your choice. If you're going to use a magnum primer, do it from the start of your work up. The rule of thumb is extruded powders, use standard primers. Ball or spherical powders like magnum primers, but you can use either for either, just stick with them once you start.
I use H4350 powder in my 308 Norma with 165gr NoslerBT. A slightly faster powder with a lighter bullet.
The possibilities are nearly endless, but you need to start somewhere. Gather as much data from the different powder and bullet sites available online. I'm sure others will chime in here with their suggestions. Reloading opens a new door to finding accurate and functional loads.

I load for several 300 WMs (Rem, Win, & Savage) best powders I have found for this caliber are RL22 and H1000. I use Fed primers but only out of convenience

I load for 3 300's, two H&H's and one Win Mag. The Win Mag likes IMR-7828. However, H-4831SC, and RL22 are usually solid choices.

One H&H likes 180 gr. Partitions, the other likes 180 gr. TSX's, and the Win Mag likes 180 gr. Accubonds. You can't go wrong with any of those.

I use Federal 215 GM primers in all of them. As far as brass goes, my cases for these 3 are usually Winchester.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up a bag or two of new brass, if I can find it locally. All I have now is a little over a box of once fired Federal brass, still working on the 2nd box.

I'll start picking up the powder and primers soon, then look into bullets a little bit later on. No hurry to load and test with the bitter cold weather moving in.

My Encore seems to like imr4831, 180 gr Barnes tsx, and Remington 9 1/2m primers. But other people have tried similar loads to mine in bolt action Remington and they didn't seem to like them as much. It all depends on the gun

My Browning A-Bolt with its short magazine and lengthy jump to the rifling did fair with IMR7828 as well as RL22 and H4350 but did not really shine until I used IMR4350 and the Barnes 168gr TSX printing 1 inch groups at 100 yds with a muzzle velocity of 3,325 fps . My load workups were all centered around 165 gr bullets and did not load the more common 180gr and higher as was more for long range deer hunting with Elk capabilities second. In regard to the magazine length verses chamber dimensions you may want to check that before making bullet selections. Short magazines and long chambers are not uncommon in the 300 Mags and excessive bullet jump can tend to add a lot more work and matierials to finding those good loads if you dont know you are dealing with this in your rifle. My rifle likes 180gr Sierra GKs over 71.6 X IMR4831 and Win LR primers. About 2950 fps or so.

It LOVES 180gr GKs over 58.5 X IMR 4895 and Win LR primers. MV is about 150fps less, but accuracy is noticeably improved, and let's face it, a 180gr pill leaving the muzzle at 2800fps is plenty of medicine for deer and elk.

I have a 180gr Accubond load that uses RL22 that looks promising. I need to gather more data though.

I have only tried magnum primers on one set of loads, and the results were not good w.r.t. accuracy. Groups over 3" at 100 yards off the bench at the best.

So...

As you can see, there are endless possibilities for the 300WM. It's a really fun chambering to load for, even more so than the .223, and that's saying something.

Yeah...Get some good case lube!!! Imperial sizing wax is awesome, my Lee lube did nothing but stick a case
I loaded some 180gr Rem Core-Lokt, over some IMR 4350, with good results.
The closer to max I got, the better the groups
