I hope to start loading 40sw again. I haven’t ever really pushed a 40 because the guns I had were not well supported. I also had a 10mm and I loaded it pretty weak because of the terrible unsupported chamber. If the auction goes my way it will be a well supported 40sw, so realistically how hot can a .40 go before it gets wild?

Check out the Hodgdon.com online data.
Using LongShot powder, you can get within equal or 50fps of many factory loaded 10mm loads. But granted that those are rather tepid 10mm loads.

I’ve seen 1,300+ FPS from my Gen2 G22 with 155gr bullets, and 1,100+FPS with 180gr coated cast. From the Glock, they’re not especially pleasant to shoot.
I find the factory equivalent loads of 1,200+ w/155gr (Winchester) or 1,000fps (180gr) to be more than ample. My target/qualification load is a 180gr Lee cast over 4.0gr of Bullseye for 825fps. Mild and VERY accurate.

I’ve killed deer with 155gr Win SilverTips and 155gr Hornady XTP’s. Heart-Lung hits put them down.
Likewise 180gr from both .40 and 10mm and 200gr from 10mm.
The .40 does all I need. A Lee 155gr SWC over a mid load of LongShot is both very accurate and effective. My guess is 20” plus of gelatin penetration.
But, then again I’ve never recovered a .40/10mm bullet shot into a deer. They always exit.

I’m content with the .40. Like Dr. Facklers findings in the late ‘80’s, there’s little difference between the .40 and 10mm IMO in actual field use. Just a bit more recoil and muzzle blast. I’ve had both a 1006 and G20.
My G22 with a $40 BCA barrel is my go-to SA for HB218 qualifying.
But when woods loafing, I’m usually carrying a .22lr or .327Fed Single-7.

Out of my M610, I've pushed 40S&W 165 grainers to just over 1,230fps and 180s to 1,175fps which is around a mid-level 10mm range. I've pushed 10mm loads to over 170fps faster. The M610 is a heavy N-frame and can take on hot loads with ease; some folks ream them out to 10mm Magnum. None of my hottest loads are unpleasant for me, but then again, I like big bores. All my 40S&Ws and 10mms have well-supported chambers.
