I just got a Garand Chambered in .308. It does not have a spacer or anything like that and is in pristine condition. Long story but the man i got it from got it in 1965. I went to range with it before i bought it and shot commercial and it did absolutely wonderful. My question is: should I observe the limitations of not shooting commerical through it like i do on my other garands. i reload for them with IMR etc. I do have a springfield M1A that i reload for. could i use the same reload for it and be ok.

bullet:sierra 168 HPBT
powder: IMR4895
Load 41.5
Coal: 2.800
Trim: 2.005

Thanks

Commercial ammunition is not loaded with Garand port pressures in mind. Your next lot of commercial may have a slow burning powder which over accelerates your operating rod. That will bang things up over time.

NATO ammo is likely to be good, though the mil surplus I have shot has been a lot hotter than a 168 with 41.5 grains. There are interchangeability standards for NATO ammo, it was supposed to run in rifles from FAL’s, M14’s, and G3’s. Hopefully it still does.

I have never used BL so i would not know. I know IMR4895 is pretty well the standard for the Garand. I loaded some last night so i will test it saturday.

You will be fine using IMR4895 or H4895 in any Garand. You can also use all the other powders acceptable for 30-06 Garand ammo like IMR4064 and Varget. Oh and BL-C2 will work very well for 7.62 NATO Garand ammo if that's what you have...
