Reloading for a Glock 22 (.40 S&W)

I have experienced case failures with the two Glocks I've had.
One was a 10mm. Loads were those at the time were recommended maximum loads for the S&W 1006 of Accurate #7.
The next issue of data from Accurate reduced the starting and maximum loadings of this powder to current levels.

With the .40S&W, the first case failures came with 200gr bullets. This was before there was much published data for either the .40 or with 200gr bullets.

I've also had a case failure while shooting lead bullets and allowing the leading to build up to the point that pressures began to spike.

I've inspected one that "ka-boomed". This was acutally an extreame example of castastrophic case failure. The slide was buldged, the barrel was split at the extractor cut, and pieces of the frame adjacent to the barrel hood/extention departed as well as the slide stop. Pieces of the plastic frame were extracted from the hand of the shooter. The gun serial number was DNR-22X (Georgia DNR firearm, purchased in 1995)

The ammo was remanufactured by Georgia Arms.

Conclusion by Glock was that the bullet was pushed back upon chambering and caused a substantial pressure spike resulting in materials failure.

GaArms asserted that even with the bullet "possibly" being set back, that the firearm should have withstood the "nominal" pressure excursion.

Resultant "settlement" resulted in GA Arms "donating" a number of tool-kit/ bags for all the firearm instructors, and a undisclosed number of cases of ammunition.
Glock replaced the firearm. Also there was a "factory recall/upgrade of the extractors, and slide releases.

Incident occured at the GPSTC (GA Public Safety Training Center during an a recruit training session circa 1997).

So, Ka-booms do happen. But are rare, and no more frequent with the Glock than other makes and models. The mode of failure is well known, and to some extent avoidable. Avoidable by using ammunition loaded to existing standards. Failures have occured with other "factory" loaded ammunition from a variety of "Government" contract companies. Nothing really new.

I've seen m1911's that were Kaboomed, Mod 10 S&W's, M36's, ect.
Usually a bullet set back or double charge with the SemiAutos.
Double charges with the Revolvers.
Any more questions ???????????

+1

This Universal load is virtually identical to the one I use, except I use a 165 gr. bullet. About 1050 - 1075 fps out of my G24 over a PACT 1 chrono. Warm, but a good load. Load 'em & shoot 'em!

Goose,
I read on another site or post.
That LEO/cops. do one of 2 things. Use/chamber the same round every other day. Ie. drop mag. empty chamber. Next day, load mag., chamber round. Then take yesterday's chambered round, and put it on top of the loaded mag.

Or Use same bullet every day. Use separate/spare mag. chamber first round(yesterday's first round). Than load full mag.
The crimp will looseen up. Causing bullet set back.:banghead:
And some Departments, don't make their guys, use their carry ammo. Every 3 mos.
