I was thinking of putting some loads together for my M1 Garand. However, I am a bit nervous because I hear horror stories of modern ammunition damaging them.

I have the Hornady 7th edition reloading manual. There is a section in there for the M1 Garand. I have selected the 155 gr A-max bullet. However, they have the exact same load listed for the 30-06 springfield, yet it has different velocities. Just curious why. Also curious if this means its a safe load with safe pressures for the M1 Garand. Anyone using similar loads?

Get an adjustable gas plug for the M1 and you can shoot any .30-06 ammo in it. Only about $30 or so.

If the load is listed in the M1 Garand section, then it is safe to use in the Garand. But, this doesn't mean it is not also a good load to use for non-Garand applications, hence the listing in the regular .30-06 section also. As to the velocity differences, I suspect the velocity readings in the Garand section were taken with the load being fired out of a Garand. Velocity readings are typically lower in autoloading rifles, as opposed to those from boltguns.

The M-1 Garand action is as strong as bolt actions. The weak point in a Garand is that damnable mile long operating rod and the low pressure gas port.

Stick to powders no slower than 4320, (I use 4895) and bullets no heavier than 180 grains (I use 147-168) and you'll have no issues working up maximum loads safely in a Garand.
