Always had excellent results from 8.0-9.0gr Unique.

8.0 gr of Unique behind 250gr of lead works great for me as well.

I'm not sure what the "corn flakes" metering has to do with anything. The pistol doesn't seem to care about a couple tenths one way or the other. :neener:

On a cast bullet forum, people have said they used Cream of Wheat or grits to fill the empty space in their loads

With all due respect, I am going to leave the kitchen chemistry to the black powder folks.

Howdy Again

Cream of Wheat, Grits, and other cereal fillers are sometimes used to take up the empty space in a cartridge loaded with BLACK POWDER. I used to fill up the empty space in some of my BP cartridges with corn meal.

However a cereal such as Cream of Wheat should NEVER be used to take up space in a cartridge loaded with Smokeless powder. NEVER!

Did I say that loud enough?

NEVER!

Any filler that has significant mass to it, such as Cream of Wheat will increase pressure in the cartridge to an unknown extent. If guys on the Cast Bullet Forum are promoting Cream of Wheat as a filler with Smokeless Powder, they are disseminating dangerous information.

Using Cream of Wheat, shotshell buffer and other fillers is a very common practice among bullet casters, yes even with smokeless powder.
A decade or so ago I was doing lots of casting and loading for several .303 British Enfields. Most of their groove diameters are significantly larger than your average .30 caliber bullet which not only destroys accuracy, but also leads to significant leading. So I began using Cream of Wheat (referred to as "COW" on the Cast Boolit site), and eventually PSB, a plastic granulated shotshell buffer. These fillers eliminated leading and dramatically increased accuracy, especially the PSB. The rule of thumb was to add the weight of the filler to the weight of the bullet and base powders charges in that manner. I logged lots of chronograph data and never had a single problem.

I've never seen the need for a filler with revolver cases, but some folks use it with success.

TrailBoss....6.0 grains behind a 230gr LRN = 778.3 fps out of a 5" Ruger Vaquero.

Odd bullet for 45 Colt

Realgun, please enlighten me...why is it odd? Hodgdon will provide 11 different loads for a 230gr LRNFP bullet in 45 Colt on their website from a search. And since I use the same bullets in 45ACP, I keep the same stock for both cartridges. What is it that don't I know?

+1 Trailboss but fairly expensive
+1 Unique

Now my 45 Colt plinker is 250grn cast 5.1grains CLAYS. Good in all guns.

Why did I just know you were using 45 ACP bullets? A proper bullet for 45 Colt has a crimp groove, and most of the proven load data is 250-255 grain. If you are using 45 ACP bullets, you are off the reservation, but I gather others do it too. If it's not in the book, I am not for it.

Hi RealGun. I used the manufacturer's load data and use a chromagraph at 20 feet to get the speed. I could not find any Trail Boss but from what I read about it, it does not fill the case as well as Tin Star, also Tin Star gives higher velocity the Trail Boss. I'm able to get a 6" group from a rest at 50 yards from a rest, but that's the best a can shoot any open sight hand gun. I did notice much lower pressure with Tin Star the 231. I did try Ungue after I started this post and it is better then 231 , but it also worked better with a card wad holding it against the flash hole. I'm still favoring the Tin Star. It nearly reached the base of the bullet which I liked but it burned clean was as accurate as any thing else I tried and when fired it had a unique smell to it that just seemed to fit if you know what I mean.

Hello 35 Whelen, That is some impressive shooting with that gun. I wish I could shoot a open sight hand gun that well. Been trying for many years.
There has been a great response to this thread. Too good and I just ordered my 4th colt 45. Should get here by the end of the week.
I have a 3rd gun in 45 colt. It is a T/C contender with a 16" threaded barrel I had special ordered so I could use the silencer off my 1911. I spent $600.00 on that barrel and waited 2 years for products. I put a carbine stock on the gun and a night vision scope. I was hoping to build a silent deadly carbine. But never could get it to shoot better then a 8" group with sub sonic loads. So I put it away 8 years ago. But with all this talk I got it back out and gave it another try. Yesterday I loaded 15 grains of AA#9 behind a 370gr cast bullet and was surprised it shot 1.5" groups at 50 yards with the silencer on. The silencer muffled the muzzle blast well but the bullet went super sonic and made a sonic boom down range. It kind of sounded like some one shooting back and drove my dog nuts.

Thanks for the kind words, Big Bore. I assure you that if I can do it, anyone can!

I've found that shooting a handgun effectively requires lots of practice.
